What is an EMC Compliance Engineer?

An EMC Compliance Engineer ensures that electronic devices meet Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) regulations and industry standards. They conduct tests, troubleshoot interference issues, and help design products to minimize electromagnetic emissions and susceptibility. Their role includes working with regulatory agencies, maintaining compliance documentation, and advising design teams on best practices. This ensures products function properly without causing or experiencing interference.

What are some typical challenges faced by an EMC Compliance Engineer in their daily work?

EMC Compliance Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex electromagnetic interference issues, staying updated on evolving international standards, and ensuring compliance across multiple regulatory bodies. They may also need to balance strict timelines while coordinating testing with design, quality, and manufacturing teams. Troubleshooting unexpected test failures or implementing design modifications under time constraints can be demanding, but these situations also offer valuable opportunities to expand technical expertise and collaborate with cross-functional groups. Working through these challenges helps EMC Compliance Engineers drive continuous product improvement and enhance their problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMC Compliance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMC Compliance Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, electromagnetic compatibility principles, and compliance testing, often supported by a relevant degree and industry experience. Familiarity with EMC test equipment, regulatory standards (such as FCC, CE, or ISO), and certifications like iNARTE EMC Engineer can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are essential to ensure products meet regulatory requirements and function reliably in various electromagnetic environments.

Job description

Billions of people pick up an Apple product every day. What they don't see is the brilliant engineering that makes it all just work - that's where you come in. Electromagnetic compatibility isn't just a compliance checkbox at Apple - it's an engineering art form. Here, you'll tackle some of the most complex and consequential EMC challenges in the industry, working on products that touch virtually every corner of the globe. We're looking for someone who naturally approaches problems with creativity and curiosity - an engineer who doesn't just solve the challenge in front of them, but reimagines how it could be solved better. We deeply value a genuine desire to acquire new skills and grow professionally, and we work best with excellent communicators who can fluently collaborate across cross-functional teams. If you're resourceful, passionate, and ready to develop solutions that don't yet exist - there's no telling what you could accomplish here.
Description
As an EMC Design Engineer, you will evaluate, design, and optimize EMC solutions that define the quality and reliability of Apple products - combining deep technical expertise with innovation and creative problem-solving at every stage of development. You will apply first-principles thinking to EMC challenges, stripping problems down to their fundamental physics to uncover solutions that go beyond conventional approaches. You will think systematically about products as integrated designs, understanding how components and subsystems contribute to overall EMC performance - always asking not just what the data shows, but why. You will seamlessly collaborate with design teams, test engineers, and cross-functional partners to develop and implement solutions that are elegant, effective, and manufacturable. You will conduct design reviews, create comprehensive test plans, and analyze results - turning findings into clear, actionable guidance for peers and leadership. You will embrace Apple's culture of continuous learning, sharing best practices and lessons learned to support first-pass success on future designs.
Minimum Qualifications
BSEE or equivalent experience
4+ years of experience and/or advanced education in EMC
Prior experience and/or education in EMC, ESD, RF and signal integrity areas
Ability to build effective working relationships with other engineers and cross-functional partners
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Willing and able to support occasional international travel to other Apple sites, vendors, and contract manufacturers
Preferred Qualifications
MSEE / PhD with a specialization in electromagnetic fields and/or applications
Experience with electromagnetic modeling and simulation tools such as CST, HFSS, and ADS
Experience in one or more of the following fields: EMC, ESD, RF/Antenna, Signal Integrity and Power Integrity
Detailed understanding of design and testing of ITE products for EMC compliance and deep knowledge in EMC/ ESD debug techniques
Experience with Matlab and scripting for test automation and data analysis
Proficient in schematic and layout review of PCBs for emissions and immunity control
Able to perform CAD review of enclosures, connectors, and cables for EMC compliance
In-depth knowledge of worldwide EMC regulations, test methods, and standards,
including EN55032, EN55035, IEC61000 series, and ETSI 301 489 series
Experience with EMC lab equipment such as spectrum and vector network analyzers, oscilloscopes, and transmission line pulsers (TLP)
