What is an RF EMC Compliance Manager?

RF EMC Compliance Managers are professionals responsible for ensuring that electronic products meet regulatory standards for radio frequency (RF) emissions and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). They oversee the testing and certification process to ensure devices do not interfere with other electronic equipment and comply with local and international regulations. These managers work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory bodies to maintain compliance throughout the product lifecycle. Their expertise helps companies avoid costly recalls, fines, and delays in bringing products to market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF EMC Compliance Manager?

To thrive as an RF EMC Compliance Manager, you need strong expertise in radio frequency (RF) engineering, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with EMC testing equipment, RF simulation software, and standards such as FCC, CE, and ISO is essential, and certifications like iNARTE EMC Engineer are highly valued. Excellent project management, analytical thinking, and clear communication skills help in coordinating cross-functional teams and interpreting complex regulations. These skills ensure products meet regulatory requirements, avoid costly delays, and maintain market access.

What are the main challenges faced by an RF EMC Compliance Manager in coordinating cross-functional teams during product development?

As an RF EMC Compliance Manager, one of the biggest challenges is ensuring all departments—such as engineering, design, and production—are aligned with regulatory compliance requirements from the earliest stages of product development. This often involves frequent communication, educating team members on evolving EMC standards, and managing timelines to incorporate compliance testing without delaying product launches. Balancing technical constraints, regulatory deadlines, and cross-functional collaboration is critical, and effective project management skills are essential for success in this role.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

A rapidly expanding, entrepreneurial technology company, Alarm.com, is seeking an ambitious and talented RF/EMC Engineer. Very few small companies innovate and develop across such a broad range of technologies as Alarm.com.

The RF/EMC Engineer position is ideal for candidates who want to work hands-on with technologies such as cellular networks (LTE, Cat-M, NB-IoT, RedCap, eRedCap), WiFi, Bluetooth, LoRa and mesh/star sub-GHz networks. Opportunities include testing, validating, and certifying the performance of cutting-edge security devices, innovative sensing applications, and life-safety devices. This is a lab-focused role for an engineer who enjoys owning test execution end-to-end — from bench measurement through external certification — while contributing to the RF and EMC quality of in-house hardware designs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently plan and perform RF performance and EMC pre-compliance testing in accordance with product specifications and applicable regulatory requirements (FCC, ISED, CE/RED).
  • Complete RF performance measurements (e.g., TRP/TIS, conducted power/spectrum, radiated/conducted emissions) to guarantee high performance across radios.
  • Evaluate, troubleshoot, and help optimize the RF performance and EMC compliance of multi-radio, in-house designed hardware.
  • Own the certification workflow: prepare test samples, develop test instructions, and witness/support testing at external certification labs.
  • Clearly document and analyze test results, and communicate findings to design and program teams.
  • Optimize and expand our testing capabilities using AI tools and other SW tools.
  • Operate independently while working with senior management to stay fully aligned with company priorities, goals, and strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar technical discipline, with a background in RF and/or EMC.
  • 2-3 years of hands-on experience performing RF performance and/or EMC testing and interpreting results against pass/fail criteria.
  • Familiarity with different wireless communication protocols (cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, sub-GHz).
  • Experience troubleshooting RF performance issues and EMC compliance failures.
  • Ability to read and understand electronic schematics.
  • Experience using electrical and RF lab equipment, such as: oscilloscope, DC power analyzer, spectrum analyzer, vector network analyzer, signal generator, and cellular communication tester.
  • Rigorous attention to detail with focus on robustness, scalability, and quality of products.
  • Self-motivation and the discipline to thoroughly test and vet wireless devices.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

BONUS POINTS FOR:

  • Familiarity with regulatory certification processes and standards (FCC, ISED, CE/RED) and preparing devices for external certification.
  • Skilled in antenna impedance matching, characterization, and optimization.
  • Experience scripting/automating lab tests using Python or another scripting language.
  • HW engineering design experience including schematic capture, layout design, and hardware bring-up.
  • Experience conducting simulation using Ansys SIwave and HFSS software.
  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
