What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded System Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Developer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, with expertise in C/C++ programming, microcontrollers, and real-time operating systems. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, integrated development environments (IDEs), and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers innovate and collaborate in cross-functional teams. These competencies are critical for designing reliable, efficient embedded solutions that power modern devices across industries.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded System Developers when working on cross-functional teams?

Embedded System Developers often collaborate with hardware engineers, software developers, and product managers. A common challenge is ensuring seamless integration between hardware and software components, as timing and resource constraints can lead to unexpected issues. Clear communication and thorough documentation are crucial for aligning specifications and troubleshooting problems that span both domains. Developers also need to stay adaptable, as project requirements may evolve rapidly based on feedback from other teams or testing results.

What are embedded system developers?

Embedded system developers are engineers who design, program, and maintain specialized computing systems that are part of larger devices, such as cars, medical equipment, home appliances, and industrial machines. These professionals work with both hardware and software to ensure that the embedded systems are efficient, reliable, and meet specific requirements. Their work often involves programming microcontrollers, integrating sensors and actuators, and optimizing resource-constrained environments. Embedded system developers play a crucial role in creating the technology behind many everyday products.

What is the difference between Embedded System Developer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded System DeveloperFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like ARM or IoT certifications are commonBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related; similar certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing embedded hardware-software systems, often in manufacturing or IoT industriesWriting low-level firmware for microcontrollers and embedded devices, typically in consumer electronics or automotive sectors
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, industrial automation, IoT firmsConsumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and embedded hardware manufacturers

Both roles involve working with embedded hardware and software, often requiring similar educational backgrounds and certifications. However, Embedded System Developers focus on designing entire embedded systems, while Firmware Engineers specialize in writing low-level code that runs directly on microcontrollers. The roles are complementary and often overlap in industry applications.

The Boeing Company is looking for an Avionics Senior Embedded System Engineer located in Plano, Texas.

This role is ideal for engineers with solid systems or electrical engineering experience who are ready to take on increased technical ownership and crossfunctional leadership on aircraft or avionics programs.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a experienced Hardware Engineer to lead and support the development, verification, and delivery of embedded avionics hardware systems. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership and accountability across hardware architecture, test development, system integration, and certification activities. This role requires deep expertise in hardware design, system engineering, and avionics standards compliance, with a strong focus on embedded systems and networked avionics interfaces.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and provide technical guidance to multi-disciplinary engineering teams in the development of embedded hardware architectures, including schematic capture, layout, rapid prototyping, and board bring-up.
  • Develop, review, and verify hardware design requirements and detailed specifications aligned with avionics system needs.
  • Define and maintain integrated verification and validation strategies and certification plans addressing hardware, firmware, and software artifacts in compliance with ARP4754B, ARP4761, DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160, and DO-330 standards.
  • Oversee development and execution of test procedures, automated test stations, test scripting, and specialized test equipment to ensure comprehensive design verification and qualification testing.
  • Lead system functional decomposition, allocation, and trade studies, including reliability and thermal modeling.
  • Collaborate closely with software and hardware architecture owners to ensure networked avionics interfaces (e.g., ARINC 429, ARINC 825, ARINC 664, Ethernet, serial, discrete I/O) meet timing, determinism, and robustness requirements.
  • Manage integration and test activities, ensuring tests are executed as documented, data is collected for post-analysis, and anomalies/non-conformances are analyzed and resolved.
  • Engage with customers and certification authorities to support program milestone reviews, certification planning, and product transition into operations and sustainment.
  • Drive adherence to Systems Engineering and Integration and Test (SEIT) best practices to ensure product safety, quality, and compliance.
  • Support troubleshooting and rapid resolution of hardware and software issues in fielded systems.
  • Influence cross-team technical decisions and foster collaboration across global teams and stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of science (or greater) from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering or chemistry or other technical degree?
  • 5 + years experience in development embedded hardware
  • Experience with the Systems Engineering product development lifecycle
  • Experience in interdisciplinary engineering planning, design, development, integration, and validation and verification of avionics and/or electronics including hardware and or software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of avionics standards and certification processes (ARP4754B, ARP4761, DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160, DO-330).
  • Experience with avionics hardware design and qualification testing, including EMI/EMC analysis
  • 15+ years of combined hardware and systems engineering experience in avionics or aerospace domains.
  • Advanced degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with networked avionics interfaces and protocols (ARINC 429, ARINC 825, ARINC 664, RS485, Ethernet).
  • Experience interacting with certification authorities (FAA, TC, CASA, EASA).
  • Demonstrated ability to build cross-functional relationships and advise senior leadership.
  • Self-motivated with a strong interest in continuous learning and hardware design innovation.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with global, cross-functional teams
  • Proven ability to lead engineering teams and manage complex technical projects.
