What does an Embedded Software Test Engineer do?

An Embedded Software Test Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and executing test plans to ensure the quality and reliability of software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers and specialized hardware. They work closely with developers to identify bugs, verify system functionality, and validate that the software meets specified requirements. Their tasks often include writing test cases, automating test scripts, and using debugging tools to ensure the embedded software performs correctly in real-world scenarios.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Software Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Test Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, proficiency in programming languages like C/C++, and experience with embedded systems. Familiarity with testing frameworks, debugging tools, version control systems (like Git), and industry certifications such as ISTQB are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you efficiently identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, high-quality embedded software in safety- and performance-critical environments.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Test Engineer vs Firmware Test Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Software Test EngineerFirmware Test Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related; knowledge of testing toolsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; experience with firmware testing
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems development labs, hardware-in-the-loop setupsEmbedded device labs, hardware testing environments
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, aerospaceConsumer electronics, IoT devices, industrial equipment
Common Search IntentTesting embedded software functionalitiesTesting firmware on embedded hardware

Embedded Software Test Engineers focus on verifying the functionality of embedded software running on hardware devices, often involving hardware-in-the-loop testing. Firmware Test Engineers primarily test the firmware that directly interacts with hardware components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ slightly, with embedded software testing emphasizing software validation and firmware testing concentrating on low-level hardware interactions.

How does an Embedded Software Test Engineer typically collaborate with hardware teams during the development process?

Embedded Software Test Engineers frequently work closely with hardware teams to ensure the seamless integration of software and hardware components. Collaboration often involves joint debugging sessions, sharing test results, and aligning on hardware specifications and constraints. Effective communication is essential, as engineers must rapidly address issues that arise during hardware-software integration and update test cases based on hardware changes. This collaborative approach helps ensure the final product meets both functional and reliability standards.

Job description

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation's space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space- delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.
The Vehicle Systems Software Department performs independent verification and validation of flight software embedded within avionics systems aboard launch vehicles, spacecraft, and other vehicle systems. Our multidisciplinary staff provides technical oversight throughout the flight software development process, from requirements definition to day-of-launch and on-orbit operations. We develop high-fidelity closed-loop hardware and software testbeds to test the software to assess its readiness for flight. VSSD is seeking an Embedded Software Test Engineer (Member of Technical Staff/Sr. Member of Technical Staff - Multidisciplinary Guidance Navigation & Control) with a passion for space and software development to be part of our team.
This position is located in El Segundo, CA., requiring at least 4 days onsite.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Develop models of space system components such as sensors, actuators, and vehicle dynamics for use in software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and emulator-based simulators
  • Conduct tests and perform analyses of software systems embedded within launch vehicles, spacecraft, CubeSats, and other mission-critical components of space systems.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of these simulations to support software validation, on-orbit anomaly resolution, and day-of-launch mission assurance activities.
  • Develop tools and techniques for enhancing analysis and simulation capabilities.

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements for a Member of Technical Staff:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM related field
  • 3 years or more of applicable professional or academic experience
  • Experience performing technical support in complex environments involving customers, program offices, engineering support, and contractors
  • Experience programming in Python and C/C++
  • Relevant project experience in embedded systems, space system design, dynamics, control systems, control algorithm design, or modeling & simulation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

In addition to the above, the minimum requirements for the Sr. Member of Technical Staff - Multidisciplinary Guidance Navigation & Control include:
  • 5 or more years of applicable professional or academic experience
  • Previous experience leading highly technical project teams
