Regular video meetings, collaborative development tools, and proactive status updates also help keep projects on track and align team efforts. By staying organized and responsive, remote engineers can overcome these obstacles and deliver high-quality embedded solutions.

What is an Embedded Software Engineer Remote job?

An Embedded Software Engineer Remote job involves designing, developing, and testing software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices, while working remotely. These engineers write low-level code, optimize performance, and ensure seamless hardware-software integration. They use programming languages like C, C++, or Python and collaborate with teams through virtual communication tools. Remote roles require strong self-discipline, effective communication, and the ability to troubleshoot issues independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Embedded Software Engineer Remote position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer Remote, you need strong programming skills in C/C++, a solid understanding of embedded systems architecture, and often a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), version control tools like Git, and hardware debugging tools is commonly required, and certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) are a plus. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are important soft skills for effective remote collaboration. These capabilities enable you to deliver reliable, efficient solutions in a distributed work environment while supporting cross-functional teams and project objectives.

In line with GM's staff-level engineering expectations, this role requires end-to-end ownership, strong architectural judgment, and the ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct authority.

You will partner closely with engineering, release management, quality, infrastructure, and program stakeholders to modernize CI/CD, improve developer velocity, strengthen observability, and raise the quality and reliability bar for infotainment software delivery.

  • Design andoptimizescalable CI/CD pipelines for embedded Linux (Yocto) builds, including build orchestration, test automation, artifact management, and release workflows

  • Improve build performance and reliability through distributed build systems (BuildBarn/RBE), caching strategies, and infrastructure optimization

  • Automate release processes including branching strategy, versioning, artifact promotion, quality gates, and compliance checks

  • Build self-service platforms, tooling, and dashboards that reduce manual effort and accelerate delivery for engineering teams

  • Improve developer workflows through GitHub automation, PR validation, smoke testing, and streamlined feedback loops

  • Establish end-to-end observability and operational excellence using metrics, logs, dashboards, alerting, incident response, and root cause analysis

  • Leverage AI/ML techniques for predictive build failures, intelligent test selection, resource optimization, anomaly detection, and proactive incident prevention

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives from concept to production, including architecture reviews, technical design discussions, and communicating trade-offs to stakeholders

  • Mentor engineers across DVE on CI/CD best practices, build engineering, and infrastructure patterns

  • Drive continuous improvement through code reviews, design guidance, process optimization, and participation in hiring and team development

  • Experience with cloud and container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and at least one major cloud platform.

  • Hands-on experience with observability tooling for metrics, logging, tracing, dashboards, and alerting; GM staff roles explicitly emphasize observability and operational excellence for production-critical systems.
