What is an embedded software engineer?

A Part-Time Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software for embedded systems while working fewer hours than a full-time role. Responsibilities typically include coding in languages like C or C++, debugging firmware, and collaborating with hardware teams. Part-time roles may be project-based, remote, or flexible in schedule. Companies hire part-time engineers to support development efforts without requiring a full-time commitment. This role is ideal for professionals seeking work-life balance or supplementary experience.

What does an embedded software engineer do?

As a part-time Embedded Software Engineer, your responsibilities often include writing and testing firmware, debugging hardware-software interactions, and supporting the integration of embedded systems into products. Part-time engineers usually work on specific project phases or support ongoing development efforts, collaborating closely with hardware engineers, product managers, and quality assurance teams. While hours may be flexible, clear communication and timely task completion are crucial for synchronizing work with full-time team members. This role offers the opportunity to tackle challenging technical problems while balancing career, education, or personal commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer Part Time, you need strong programming skills in C/C++, understanding of embedded systems, experience with hardware interfacing, and a relevant engineering or computer science background. Familiarity with development tools like debuggers, oscilloscopes, and version control systems, as well as industry certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE), is often beneficial. Effective communication, troubleshooting ability, and time management are key soft skills for part-time engineers who frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams under tight schedules. These skills ensure reliable product development, efficient problem-solving, and smooth collaboration in dynamic and often resource-constrained environments.

Job description

Position Summary

Blue Ops is building and deploying an autonomous unmanned surface vessel (USV) fleet for defense applications. We are seeking a hands-on, part-time engineering support team member to contribute to embedded software, hardware integration, and test efforts across our West Palm Beach and Stuart locations. This is a working technical role well suited to a current engineering student or early-career engineer who wants direct exposure to real-time embedded systems, marine robotics, and defense-sector development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and debug embedded software in C/C++ for real-time and hard-real-time data paths on autonomous marine platforms.
  • Integrate and validate sensors, microcontrollers (ESP32/STM32/nRF52-class), and single-board computers, including ADC integration, sampling, filtering, and calibration.
  • Support communications and networking work, including LoRa/MQTT/mesh telemetry, Wi-Fi HaLow backhaul, and socket-based host interfaces (UDP/TCP).
  • Build tooling and automated test harnesses (e.g., Python scripts, GoogleTest) to validate behavior and catch regressions without full-system deployment.
  • Perform bench and field testing using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and related instrumentation for signal-integrity and timing analysis; iterate firmware to improve robustness.
  • Contribute to interface specifications and technical documentation, working within ITAR/export-control constraints.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team on integration, test planning, and issue tracking (Git, Jira, Confluence).

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in C and C++, with working knowledge of Python.
  • Experience with embedded/microcontroller development and bare-metal or RTOS firmware.
  • Hands-on familiarity with lab instrumentation (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes) and hardware debugging.
  • Comfortable working on-site at both the West Palm Beach and Stuart, FL locations.
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week on a part-time schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with wireless/mesh networking (LoRa, Meshtastic, MQTT, Wi-Fi HaLow) and networked host interfaces (UDP sockets).
  • Familiarity with FPGA/VHDL, PCB design (KiCad), and power-management/electronics design.
  • Exposure to defense-sector development, test engineering, or work under ITAR/export-control requirements.
  • Experience with version control and Agile tooling (Git, Jira, Confluence).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to walk, stand, and navigate large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in designated areas or when performing specific tasks, in accordance with safety protocols and company policy.
  • May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch during inspections, maintenance walk-throughs, or emergency response situations.
  • Regular exposure to facility operations including noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and industrial equipment.
  • Occasional off-hours or weekend work required for emergency facility responses or projects as needed
  • Requires frequent use of a computer and other standard office equipment for documentation, communication, and coordination tasks.
