What is an embedded manager?

An Embedded Manager is a professional who oversees and manages embedded systems projects, typically within the electronics or software development industries. Their primary responsibilities include coordinating teams that design, develop, and maintain embedded hardware and software, ensuring project timelines and quality standards are met. They often act as a bridge between technical staff and upper management, translating business requirements into technical solutions. Embedded Managers need a strong background in embedded systems engineering, excellent leadership skills, and experience in project management. This role is vital in industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation.

How does an embedded manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

As an Embedded Manager, you will frequently work with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, software developers, QA specialists, and product managers. Your role often involves facilitating communication between these groups, aligning project milestones, and ensuring that embedded systems integrate smoothly with other components. Effective collaboration is essential to address technical challenges early and to maintain project timelines. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and proactive issue resolution are key practices in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Manager, you need a solid background in embedded systems design, project management, and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with technical tools like C/C++ programming, RTOS, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and certifications such as PMP or Agile are often required. Outstanding leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and drive complex projects to completion. These skills and qualities ensure high-performance product delivery, smooth collaboration, and innovation in dynamic engineering environments.

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to lead the design and development of next-generation connected vehicle technologies for mission-critical mobile equipment. This individual will serve as a technical leader while remaining hands-on in software architecture, development, integration, and validation. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in embedded Linux, C/C++, connected vehicle technologies, and telematics, with a passion for building scalable, secure, and reliable embedded software solutions.
This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and hands-on testing within vehicle environments to ensure software performs reliably in real-world operating conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for connected vehicle solutions.
  • Build features supporting telematics, edge computing, remote diagnostics, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, vehicle network integration, and video recording/streaming capabilities.
  • Develop high-quality, production-ready software using modern embedded development practices.
Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical leadership while remaining actively involved in software development.
  • Define software architecture and establish engineering standards that promote scalability, security, reliability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Mentor engineers and champion engineering best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
Software Architecture & Engineering Excellence
  • Drive architecture decisions and design reviews.
  • Promote clean, modular, and reusable software design using established design patterns.
  • Ensure software quality through code reviews, testing strategies, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Agile Delivery & Execution
  • Support Agile development by improving backlog readiness, removing technical roadblocks, and ensuring predictable sprint and release execution.
  • Partner with Product Owners and engineering leadership to deliver high-quality solutions on schedule.
Vehicle Validation
  • Perform hands-on software testing, troubleshooting, and validation within heavy-duty vehicles and truck platforms.
  • Validate software functionality under real-world operating conditions in manufacturing facilities and field environments.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with embedded, cloud, front-end, systems, and product engineering teams.
  • Resolve complex technical challenges across multiple disciplines to ensure successful end-to-end solution delivery.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of embedded software development experience using C and C++.
  • Experience developing and testing applications on Embedded Linux platforms.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, embedded design patterns, and software engineering best practices.
  • Experience with networking protocols including TCP/IP and UDP.
  • Proven technical leadership experience while remaining hands-on in software development.
  • Experience developing connected vehicle, telematics, or mobile asset platforms that include:
    • Cloud-connected architectures
    • Cellular communications
    • Remote diagnostics
    • Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates
    • Fleet management technologies
  • Ability and willingness to perform hands-on testing inside vehicle cabs, manufacturing environments, and customer locations.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for customer support and field validation activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Rust for embedded software development.
  • Experience with automotive or heavy-duty vehicle communication protocols including:
    • CAN
    • J1939
