Embedded Hardware Developer information

What is the difference between Embedded Hardware Developer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Hardware DeveloperEmbedded Systems Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and development of hardware components for embedded systemsDesign and integration of both hardware and software for embedded systems
Required SkillsHardware design, PCB layout, circuit analysisHardware knowledge plus software programming, RTOS, firmware
Work EnvironmentHardware labs, prototyping, testing hardwareMultidisciplinary teams, hardware and software integration
Common CertificationsASIC/FPGA design, PCB certificationEmbedded systems certifications, RTOS training

While both roles work closely in embedded systems development, Embedded Hardware Developers focus primarily on hardware design and testing, whereas Embedded Systems Engineers handle both hardware and software integration. The roles often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and expertise.

Job description

NextGen RF Design is seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer to become an integral part of our team! You will assist in the research, design and development of real time embedded systems to control proprietary radio protocols, monitor and control radio functions, system fault monitoring, hardware interface drivers, and a wide variety of other tasks in a microcontroller environment. In addition, the Embedded Firmware Engineer will also architect and design digital signal processing (DSP) concepts in both processor and FPGA environments. The ideal candidate will have relevant knowledge of Linux based software defined radio platforms.
Responsibilities:
  • Architect, develop, debug, and validate code for embedded systems using C and C++
  • Develop firmware using real time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Develop embedded Linux applications and kernel drivers
  • Develop PC applications for embedded control
  • Develop and interface to a wide variety of hardware abstraction layers
  • Debug and test firmware using standard test equipment
  • Develop user interface to support hardware and test engineering
  • Maintain code using code repository tools
  • Meet with clients to determine and document software requirements
  • Work from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts, or defined plans to perform testing and trouble-shooting functions

Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to develop and debug low level MCU functionality including hardware peripherals, interrupts, and CPU registers
  • Experience using C, C++, and C#
  • Experience designing and architecting systems using bare metal or real-time operating systems
  • Experience with interrupt driven designs and real-time processing
  • Ability to understand and implement digital signal processing (DSP) concepts in a processor and/or FPGA
  • Experience with test equipment such as logic analyzer, oscilloscope, and spectrum analyzer
  • Ability to troubleshoot firmware related issues within a complex system
  • Experience creating user interface for test and development using tools such as command line interface, C#, and LabVIEW
  • Experience with RF protocols such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Cellular, LoRa, or proprietary
  • Self-motivated with the ability to carry out a design task from concept to implementation

Qualifications:
  • Must be pursuing a degree in electrical or computer engineer
  • Must be currently enrolled at a Junior, Senior, or Graduate level
  • Should have a general aptitude for software development
