How much do embedded electrical engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded electrical engineer in the United States is $111,091.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $132,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an embedded electrical engineer do?

An Embedded Electrical Engineer designs, develops, and tests embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger electrical or mechanical systems. These engineers work with both hardware and software, integrating microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronic components to create efficient and reliable products. They are often involved in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, medical devices, and industrial automation. Their responsibilities typically include circuit design, firmware programming, prototyping, and troubleshooting. Collaboration with cross-functional teams to meet project requirements is also a key part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded electrical engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Electrical Engineer, you need a strong background in circuit design, embedded systems, and programming languages like C/C++, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, PCB design software, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is crucial, and certifications like IPC or ARM may be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure reliable product development, seamless multidisciplinary teamwork, and the ability to address complex technical challenges in embedded systems.

How do embedded electrical engineers typically collaborate with software developers during a project?

Embedded Electrical Engineers frequently work closely with software developers to ensure that the hardware and software components of embedded systems integrate seamlessly. This collaboration often involves joint troubleshooting sessions, design reviews, and integration testing to identify and resolve compatibility issues early in the development process. Good communication and documentation skills are essential, as engineers must clearly convey hardware constraints and requirements while understanding the needs and limitations of the software side. Regular meetings and cross-functional teamwork are common, making the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams a key part of the role.

What is the difference between Embedded Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Electrical EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollersBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, focus on circuit design and power systems
Work EnvironmentHardware development labs, embedded system projectsDesign offices, project planning, and testing environments
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, IoT devicesPower distribution, industrial automation, building systems

Embedded Electrical Engineers focus on developing and programming embedded systems and hardware for specific applications, often working with microcontrollers and real-time operating systems. Electrical Design Engineers primarily design electrical circuits and systems for broader applications like power and industrial systems. While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, Embedded Electrical Engineers specialize in embedded hardware and firmware, whereas Electrical Design Engineers focus on circuit design and system integration.
