St. Therese School, a PK-Grade 8 Catholic Elementary School located in Succasunna, NJ,  is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and service-oriented School Custodian to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The ideal candidate enjoys working independently, takes pride in their work, and supports the mission of Catholic education.

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Principal, and the Director of Facilities performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; maintains equipment in functional condition; and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors and others as necessary. The School Custodian is responsible for the daily cleanliness, maintenance, and operational needs of the school during the school day. This position supports lunch operations, performs routine cleaning and minor maintenance, responds to custodial needs as they arise, and helps ensure the school remains clean, safe, and well-maintained. 

Performs related duties and general maintenance work as required.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Checks and secures building at beginning and end of shift for the purpose of ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the building.
  • Prepare the gym for daily lunch service by setting up tables and chairs.
  • Set up trash and recycling stations, cleaning supplies, and lunch service materials for volunteers.
  • Sweep and mop the gym during and after lunch periods.
  • Respond to spills and emergency cleanups throughout the school day.
  • Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
  • Clean classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas as needed.
  • Removes graffiti, cleans glass areas.
  • Replaces light bulbs.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs.
  • Replace paper products and replenish custodial supplies.
  • Monitor custodial inventory and communicate supply needs.
  • Assist with school event setup and breakdown.
  • Set up and escort vendors on campus when needed.
  • Receives deliveries and assists in unloading trucks and storing supplies.
  • Delivers supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms and other areas of the building.
  • Clears snow from entrances and walks, and spreads sand and ice melting chemicals.
  • Performs grounds-keeping duties, clears debris and maintains grounds.
  • On call 24/7 monitoring alarm center

Additional Duties:               

  • Performs general cleaning, and repair work, particularly during school vacations.
  • Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.


Equipment 
Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools. 
Safety Requirements 
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties. 
Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks. 
Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets. 
Qualifications







Qualifications Profile:

  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
    Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Previous experience in building and cleaning maintenance desirable.
  • Ability to perform physical work, such as lifting, bending, climbing stairs, standing for extended periods, and including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and vendors.
  • NJ Motor Vehicle Operator's license or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Must successfully complete all required diocesan background checks and Safe Environment requirements.
