What Are Jobs in the Electronics Field?
If you’re familiar with electronics, you have a wide range of careers available. One of the most prestigious and highly-paid options is an electronics engineer. In this position, you design electronic circuits and determine how they travel through a building, as well as find ways to make electronics work more efficiently. You can also work in manufacturing, creating electronic components. The duties of this field require you to connect wires to circuit boards or perform similar tasks. You could also be an electrician, in which your responsibilities involve diagnosing electrical problems at a facility. You can also work in the technology industry.

What do electronics technicians do?
What is the difference between Electronics vs Electrical Technician?
| Aspect | Electronics | Electrical Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires an associate degree or diploma in electronics or related field | Often requires a diploma or technical certification in electrical systems |
| Work Environment | Design, testing, and troubleshooting electronic devices and circuits | Installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in buildings or machinery |
| Industry Usage | Consumer electronics, telecommunications, aerospace, and manufacturing | Construction, utilities, manufacturing, and maintenance services |
Electronics professionals focus on electronic circuits, devices, and systems, often working in design and testing roles. Electrical Technicians primarily handle electrical wiring, systems installation, and maintenance. While both roles require technical skills, Electronics specialists typically work more with small components and circuit design, whereas Electrical Technicians deal with larger electrical systems and infrastructure.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level which includes performing routine and standardized tasks under the guidance of senior technicians, assisting in the alignment, calibration, and troubleshooting of electronic and electrical systems, using standard test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, and oscilloscopes to perform basic diagnostic tests and record data, assisting with routine preventative maintenance, conducting safety checks, and maintaining accurate documentation for repair services, supporting team members in the testing, repair, and maintenance of electronic components and assisted in preparing sketches and schematics for electronic systems.
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Technology, or Electronics/Electrical Technician.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS-08
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level which includes assisting with troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining a variety of electronic systems and components, handling conventional assignments, applying established electronic principles and techniques to resolve common circuitry problems and carry out preventive maintenance, using a range of test equipment, including spectrum analyzers and oscilloscopes, to perform tests and calibrations, assisting senior technicians in conducting inspections, documenting work accomplishments, and solving complex technical issues, demonstrating the ability to select and apply appropriate problem-solving methods for moderately complex tasks.
OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Technology, or Electronics/Electrical Technician.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
GS-09
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level which includes being responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electronic systems, to include independently diagnose and resolve a range of difficult electronic circuitry problems, performing both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to ensure system reliability and efficiency, applying and adapting established electronic principles to analyze and test systems, using advanced test equipment to ensure operational specifications are met, and contributing to system modifications, prepared technical reports, and maintained records of work accomplishments, demonstrating the ability to handle a variety of complex technical assignments with minimal supervision.
OR
Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education; or a master's degree or equivalent leading to such a degree with a major study in a subject related to the position to be filled such as Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Technology, or Electronics/Electrical Technician. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcript(s)).
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for this position. Determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify for this position. (To compute the percentage, divide you total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).
GS-10
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level which includes resolving a wide range of complex and non-routine issues with minimal supervision, independently diagnosis, repair, modify, and evaluate interconnected electronic systems, adapting techniques and improvising solutions to address unique operating conditions or component failure, also includes conducting comprehensive performance and acceptance tests on new and existing equipment, analyzing the impact of system changes, and preparing detailed technical reports and documentation to ensure optimal system performance and reliability.
