What does an electronics engineering manager do?

An Electronics Engineering Manager oversees teams of engineers who design, develop, and test electronic systems and components. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and ensure that design and production meet quality standards and regulatory requirements. Additionally, they collaborate with other departments, mentor engineering staff, and stay updated on the latest technological advancements to drive innovation within their organization.

How does an electronics engineering manager typically balance technical responsibilities with team leadership duties?

As an Electronics Engineering Manager, you'll often juggle hands-on technical oversight with people management. This means not only guiding the design and development of electronic systems but also mentoring engineers, coordinating project timelines, and facilitating cross-functional collaboration. Balancing these aspects requires strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate effectively while staying technically engaged. Many managers participate in design reviews, set engineering standards, and ensure team members have the resources and support needed to succeed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electronics engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electronics Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, project management, and typically a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with design tools like Altium Designer or OrCAD, project management software, and certifications such as PMP or Six Sigma are highly valued. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help motivate teams and bridge technical and business goals. These capabilities ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet high technical standards in a rapidly evolving field.

Job description

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related Science, Engineering, Technology or Mathematics field. Also requires 8+ years of job-related experience, or a Master's degree plus 6 years of job-related experience.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:: Department of Defense Secret security clearance is obtainable within a reasonable amount of time after hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:

As an Electromagnetics & High Frequency Power Electronics Engineer for General Dynamics Mission Systems, you’ll be a member of a cross functional team responsible for developing smaller, more efficient high voltage power supplies as part of our subsea communication systems.

We encourage you to apply if you have any of these preferred skills or experiences: Custom magnetics design, resonant converter topologies (LLC, SRC), FEA simulation (ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL), HV isolation design, EMI/EMC.

Also nice to have are the following: Defense/aerospace background, experience with wide bandgap devices (SiC, GaN), hands-on magnetics characterization experience

What sets you apart:

  • Electromagnetics Foundation

    • Maxwell's equations and their practical application to magnetics and parasitics
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for magnetic field simulation (ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL) — essential for designing custom magnetics that perform as expected before hardware is built
    • Understanding of dielectric behavior and electric field distribution in HV isolated design
    • EMI/EMC analysis at high frequencies

    High Frequency Magnetics Design

    • Design custom high frequency power transformers for HV isolated applications
    • Understand and manage core loss, copper loss, and thermal behavior at high frequencies
    • Select and apply appropriate core materials (ferrite, nanocrystalline, amorphous) for target frequency ranges
    • Design windings to mitigate skin and proximity effects
    • Control leakage inductance and interwinding capacitance — parameters that are critical to both efficiency and isolation integrity in HV designs

Resonant Circuit Design (LC Tank Circuits)

    • Design and optimize LC tank circuits for resonant power conversion
    • Understand the interaction between the transformer and the resonant network — these cannot be designed in isolation at high frequencies
    • Tune resonant designs for zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS) to minimize switching losses and maximize efficiency
    • Analyze and manage frequency-dependent behavior across load and input voltage ranges
  • Identifies opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation

Experience/Education:

  • 5+ years with direct experience in high frequency magnetics design and resonant power electronics
  • BSEE minimum; MSEE or PhD in Electromagnetics or Power Electronics strongly preferred

Our Commitment to You:

  • An exciting career path with opportunities for continuous learning and development.
  • Research oriented work, alongside award winning teams developing practical solutions for our nation’s security
  • Flexible schedules with every other Friday off work, if desired (9/80 schedule)
  • Competitive benefits, including 401k matching, flex time off, paid parental leave, healthcare benefits, health & wellness programs, employee resource and social groups, and more
