Electronics Engineer Entry information

What are some typical projects or tasks that an entry-level electronics engineer can expect to work on in their first year?

As an entry-level electronics engineer, you’ll often begin by assisting with circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout under the guidance of senior engineers. You may also be involved in testing and troubleshooting prototypes, documenting results, and updating technical specifications. Collaboration with cross-functional teams such as mechanical engineering, software development, and manufacturing is common, providing valuable exposure to the full product development lifecycle. These experiences help build a strong technical foundation and open up opportunities for advancement within the engineering team.

What does an entry-level electronics engineer do?

An entry-level electronics engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing electronic systems and components, such as circuits, microprocessors, and communication devices. They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers, helping with tasks like schematic design, prototyping, troubleshooting, and documentation. Entry-level electronics engineers may also conduct research, perform simulations, and support the manufacturing process to ensure electronics meet project specifications and industry standards.

What is the difference between Electronics Engineer Entry vs Electronics Technician?

AspectElectronics Engineer EntryElectronics Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering or related fieldAssociate degree or diploma in Electronics Technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing of electronic systemsInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electronic equipment
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, tech companies, manufacturingRepair shops, manufacturing plants, service providers

Electronics Engineer Entry roles focus on designing and developing electronic systems, requiring a bachelor's degree. Electronics Technicians typically handle installation and maintenance, often with an associate degree. Both roles are essential in the electronics industry but differ in responsibilities and educational requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electronics Engineer Entry, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electronics Engineer Entry, you need a solid understanding of circuit design, electronics fundamentals, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, SPICE simulators, and PCB design software, along with knowledge of industry standards and possibly an FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) certification, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities make an entry-level engineer stand out. These skills ensure precise design, smooth collaboration, and successful project execution in a technology-driven environment.

Delivering HighQuality Downhole Tool Performance Through Technical Expertise and Precision

Do you enjoy working with advanced downhole technology and handson electromechanical systems?

Partner with the best

Baker Hughes is a global energy technology company serving customers across more than 120 countries. Our Oilfield Services & Equipment business delivers innovative tools and services that enable safe, reliable, and efficient operations in challenging environments. Our teams combine mechanical, electronic, and hydraulic expertise to support highperformance downhole systems used in drilling, evaluation, and intervention.

Fuel your passion

The Electromechanical Technician - Downhole Tools plays a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and highquality delivery of complex downhole tools. You will apply handson technical skills across electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems to assemble, test, troubleshoot, and qualify tools designed for highpressure, hightemperature (HPHT) environments. Working closely with engineering, quality, and field service teams, you will help maintain tool readiness and support continuous improvement across operations

As an Electromechanical Technician - Downhole Tools, you will be responsible for:

  • Assemble, test, troubleshoot, and repair downhole electronic assemblies including PCBs, sensors, telemetry modules, power systems, and wiring harnesses.
  • Assemble, disassemble, inspect, and repair mechanical tool components including housings, bearings, shafts, seals, fasteners, and connectors.
  • Assemble, test, and troubleshoot hydraulic systems such as valves, pistons, actuators, and pressure chambers.
  • Perform electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and system-level functional testing using standard test equipment and fixtures.
  • Conduct pressure, leak, and environmental testing to verify tool performance and compliance with specifications.
  • Diagnose nonconformances and failures, support root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with Baker Hughes Quality Management System (QMS) and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, inspection records, and component traceability.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and field service teams to support tool readiness and reliability.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, safety, and efficiency.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Associate Degree (AAS/AS) in Electromechanical Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related discipline OR equivalent technical training and career experience.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience with electromechanical, hydraulic, and downhole tool or similar systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, assembly procedures, and test documentation.
  • Working knowledge of electronic test equipment such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with standard measuring tools and torque-controlled assembly.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and test data entry.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-critical manufacturing or service environment.
Desired Characteristics
  • Experience with data analytics, Excel, SAP, MS Office, Outlook, and other database applications.
  • IPC certifications (IPC-A-610, IPC-J-STD-001).
  • Experience with HPHT or oilfield downhole tools.
  • Hydraulic systems training or certification.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to mentor junior technicians.
  • Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and safety-first mindset.
