Job description

Company Overview

Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We've designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We're looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Joby's flight research team works on the leading edge technology to push Joby forward in its mission to build the world's smartest, cleanest and most advanced aviation systems and aircraft. We're transforming the way airplanes fly- so air mobility will be radically safer, more efficient, more accessible, and more sustainable than ever.

Overview

Joby is seeking a highly motivated Electrical System Design Engineer who will own the design and construction of electrical and avionic systems for Autonomous Aircraft, located primarily at Joby's Concord facility in Northern California. They will coordinate between the various departments - Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software, Flight Test, Manufacturing, Operations - to ensure the technical success of their designs. This role will serve as the primary point of contact for the entire lifecycle of electrical wire harnesses and avionics design. The design documentation generated will facilitate harness manufacturing and installation onto the aircraft by technicians as well as supporting subsequent activities such as flight test and refactoring.

Responsibilities and compensation commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

In the first few weeks:

  • Get to know the team and the aircraft
  • Help document the existing electrical systems and plan for updates

In the first 6 months:

  • Design of wire harnesses and wire harness installations.
  • Lead electrical hardware designs that assist in our flight test and certification efforts.
  • Work with internal and external resources to get wire harness fabricated.
  • Support in the installation of avionics equipment in the flight test aircraft.

Within a year:

  • Take ownership of wiring diagrams, wire harness development and our avionics installations in our labs and aircraft.
  • Support flight test activities by helping troubleshoot flight test aircraft.
  • Support certification activities with electrical loads analysis, electrical power design and substantiation.
