Job description

Position Summary:
Reporting to a Field Service Manager, a Field Service Engineer will maintain technical responsibility over the Mevion Medical Systems Proton Therapy System.  A Field Service Engineer will learn and become proficient in operating the Mevion Medical Systems Proton Therapy System (PTS) for various customer needs and related work functions. A Field Service Engineer will regularly interact with the customers’ professional and technical staff to resolve all operational issues with Mevion products at customer sites.

Essential Functions:

  • Operate Proton Therapy System, which will include, but not be limited to: Troubleshooting, Post Service Testing.  
  • Provide highly visible customer support through the performance of on-site operation, corrective and preventive maintenance of proton therapy equipment and ancillary devices.
  • Clearly communicate the status of the system to the customer as well as to Mevion employees.
  • Work on other highly complex clinical systems related to the Proton Therapy System, including Motion control systems, CT Scanners, X-ray and Radiological technology devices and robotic manipulators directly at the customer site. 
  • Ensuring that Proton Therapy (PT) devices are performing according to specification.  Monitor daily treatments and system performance and identify any corrections or improvements the system may need. Reporting and documenting all complaints and key performance indicators of the PT device.
  • Ensure equipment/systems are working properly with the required level of compliance/quality/technical performance/customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain equipment/systems according to the maintenance schedule. 
  • Troubleshoot PTS equipment including electrical, mechanical, and software problems.
  • Repair equipment/systems taking all necessary actions to solve problems. 
  • Report and document interventions and actions undertaken with the required level of details and accuracy in accordance with facility, RA/QA and FDA regulations.
  • Meet appropriate key performance indicators (throughput, customer satisfaction, uptime…).
  • Maintaining a high degree of professional knowledge and safety consciousness according to Mevion guidelines in order to perform activities under the safest working conditions.
  • Maintain a clean working environment and behavior in line with the safety and regulatory rules.
  • Maintain calibrated equipment and tooling according to specifications.
  • Maintain on site inventory and other part management duties.
  • Other duties as assigned by Service Management.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, or other related field preferred, or 4-6+ years of technical experience in the Military or equivalent (i.e.  Electronics technicians, mechanics, etc.)
  • Experience with radiation therapy equipment is a plus.
  • Electronic/Electrical and Mechanical ability.
  • Experience working with computer interfaces, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Preferred experience with proton systems
  • Strong interest in new technology and learning new systems – continuous learning curve.
  • Sound computer usage and debugging skills.
  • Knowledge of networks and networking techniques
  • Solid understanding of imaging systems
  • Experience with Salesforce or equivalent CRM product and productivity software desired.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and data analysis techniques is required. 
  • Medical Physics experience is a plus.
  • Experience with dosimetry hardware & software.

Familiarity with the following is a plus:

  • Cooling systems, cryogenics, vacuum systems, PLC’s, regulation loops, drivers, sensors, electric motors, high voltage equipment, low voltage equipment, etc. 
  • Mechanical system repair, maintenance and operations of large systems.

Must have the ability to learn the following within the first six months:

  • Learn the operating principles and service techniques for the subsystems of MEVION equipment.
  • Become proficient in all software, control system elements and user interfaces to the MEVION systems.
  • Understand the electrical, vacuum, and water-cooling systems of MEVION equipment and Hospital infrastructure for the MEVION equipment.

Physical and Environmental Considerations:

  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time, bending, stooping, kneeling and crouching.
  • Ascend and descend ladders and stairs at heights of up to 20 feet.
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Good manual dexterity. 
  • Ability to speak fluent English and hear clearly. 
  • With little notice, must have the ability and willingness to work off shift, nights, weekends and holidays.  More than 40 hours per week is often required. 
  • Ability to travel for weeks at a time, sometimes longer, both domestic and international. Occasionally on a moment’s notice
  • Must be able to use all standard office equipment such as computer, keyboard, copier and telephone.
  • The employee will work with hazardous material, radiation producing equipment, high magnetic fields, high voltages, compressed and liquefied gases, and radioactive materials.
  • This position involves occasional exposure to high magnetic fields and routine exposure to magnetic fields above 5 gausses. Individuals with pacemakers, automatic defibrillators, or similar implants are physically disqualified from this position. Individuals with other implanted metallic materials must be considered on a case-by-case basis, per medical advice from the candidate’s physician and company policy.
  • Strict adherence to corporate safety procedures is mandatory.
