Job description

Summary
Provide electrical engineering expertise and direction for equipment and control systems, utilized in the Utility generation and transmission of electric power (high-medium-low voltage power, metering, control, security and fire alarm) ; and/or Customer utilization electrical systems (medium-low voltage power, control and fire alarm).
Develop solutions for electrical power and control systems in generation, transmission, substation, planning, metering or Customer utilization sites as assigned. Ensures that standards of quality, economics, safety, reliability, maintainability, timeliness and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide lead engineer function for a wide range of large or complex projects .
  • Develop specifications and design packages and provide technical oversight for all, in accordance with applicable industry standards.
  • Perform factory or field visits to support design reviews, inspections, evaluations, and testing, as well coordinate with vendors during the manufacturing process.
  • Perform field visits to complete field inspections, condition assessments, and equipment evaluations and develop technical recommendations for complex scenarios with limited oversight.
  • Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours.
  • Independently coordinate cross disciplinary activities for the successful development and execution of projects and/or O&M activities.
  • Provide expertise in the selection, interpretation and application of codes, standards and procedures. Set internal standards and procedures.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various electrical equipment and systems for proper installation, problem identification and troubleshooting. Recommend improvements to the design and construction.
  • Manage the technical and commercial aspects of work performed by external entities.
  • Represent the Authority at industry conferences, committees, or task forces.
  • Review designs, calculations, specifications, and reports produced by other internal engineers and external consultants.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for junior engineers.

PSE Group/Site Electrical
  • Provide direction to the design and drafting personnel in the development of the project drawings and review work product

Site Electrical
  • Work independently as an Electrical Maintenance and Asset Management subject matter expert (SME).
  • Hold work clearances, and coordinate work activities

Metering Group
  • Oversee the operational and revenue meter data collection systems meeting all regulatory requirements
  • Interface within NYPA and external agencies to support settlement and reporting activities.
  • Expertise in electrical measurement and data collection equipment/systems

Site ECC
  • Perform emergency response on a 24x7 on-call basis to support ECC.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable codes, standards, regulations.
  • Ability to apply diverse technical principles and practices, with the understanding of the NYPA's policies, operations and objectives, to complex engineering deliverables.
  • Proven success in the management of technical and commercial aspects of complex projects.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proficient in Electrical design or forecasting software such as SKM Power Tools preferred.
  • Ability to adapt communication style and content to effectively convey the desired message to the target audience.
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple complex projects.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented with ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Ability to perform complex engineering calculations, and establish new standard specifications, scopes of work, reports, and interdisciplinary design packages.

PSE/Metering/Site Engineering Groups
  • Expertise in the design, operation, and maintenance of power system components related to power generating plant, transmission, substation facilities, metering,and their various related systems and components

CPD Engineer
  • Expertise in the design, operation, and maintenance of power system components related to commercial and industrial facilities and their various systems and components

Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
  • Master's of Engineering Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of related work experience.
  • New York State P.E License required, or P.E License from another state, with New York State endorsement within 12 months of start date.
  • Experience in a lead engineer role in the electric utility industry or electrical construction, preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 25% travel, primarily within NY State
  • Willingness to enter confined spaces and climb/scale power system apparatuses is required.
  • Site ECC: Must be able to provide 24/7 on-call support to ECC.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
