Position Description
Are you an experienced electrical engineer with a strong track record of leading technical teams and executing complex utility infrastructure projects? If so, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a Supervisor Electrical Engineer to join our team, and we hope you consider applying!
This crucial leadership role sits within SPU's Project Delivery and Engineering Branch (ETSD). You will step into an established, vital position to lead, support, and grow a talented team of professional engineering staff. Your team will deliver new capital projects and provide engineering subject matter expertise across all of SPU's diverse lines of business-including Water, Drainage and Wastewater (DWW), and Solid Waste.

Job Responsibilities
As the Supervisor Electrical Engineer, your core focus will be to lead staff to success, provide high-quality engineering deliverables, and serve as an engineering subject matter expert throughout the utility.
Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and foster the growth and development of a professional engineering design team. You will directly supervise four staff members: one Senior Civil Engineer, two Senior Electrical Engineers, and one Associate Electrical Engineer.
  • Project Oversight: Supervise staff performing work-or directly serve as the project engineer-on the most technically complex, highly visible, and/or controversial projects involving Cathodic Protection, EE work for Pump Stations, Facilities, ETAP, SCADA interface, project commissioning, and general utility infrastructure.
  • Design & Planning Management: Supervise the activities of the design team in the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans, schedules, cost estimates, budgets, detailed final construction plans, specifications, and agreements. Oversee project progress from design through construction.
  • Contractor & Consultant Oversight: Monitor the work of consultants and construction contractors to ensure strict compliance with contract provisions, timelines, and scopes of work.
  • Reporting & Administration: Supervise the preparation of, or directly prepare, a variety of official documents, correspondence, technical reports, workloads forecasts, project variance reports, and progress reports.

Qualifications
Education:
  • A Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides preparation to complete professional Electrical Engineering work.

Experience:
  • Requires six (6) years of professional electrical engineering experience, which must include at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Washington is required.
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

The Ideal Candidate Will Demonstrate:
  • Proven capability to effectively supervise, mentor, and build cohesive engineering teams.
  • Strong technical background in utility or industrial environments (e.g., pump stations, treatment plants, SCADA interface, power system analysis/ETAP, and cathodic protection).
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills to coordinate with consultants, utility crews, and public agencies.

Additional Information
Workplace Environment (Telework Expectation): This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to come into the office three times a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
