The City of Appleton is seeking a full-time Electrical Inspector. This position is responsible for performing inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings for compliance with City and State codes. Work involves routine field inspection, investigation of complaints, issuing permits, reviewing proposals and plans, and dealing with the public. Work is performed under the general direction of the Inspections Supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Essential Job Functions
• Reviews plans for electrical installations for compliance of codes prior to issuance of permits.
• Reviews permit applications and issues permits.
• Performs onsite inspections of various phases of construction to ensure compliance as required by Wisconsin Administrative & Building codes, National Electric Code (NEC) and City ordinances and policies.
• Investigates complaints, with follow up if necessary.
• Consults with property owners, builders, architects, and engineers to resolve problems and complaints regarding code application and interpretation.
• Completes daily inspection reports.
• Participates in the activities of various inspection department boards, committees, or review teams.
• Confers with other City department personnel on areas of code or policy overlap.
• Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.
Other Job Functions
• Assists with storm damage assessment as needed.
• Acts as a witness in court actions for compliance of orders issued for various violations.
• Initiates noncompliance orders, citations, and other enforcement actions when necessary.
• Oversees record maintenance, report preparation and permit/report data entry into computer files.
Typical Qualifications
Considerable experience in building construction with technical training in reading blueprints and other related materials and certification as UDC Electrical Inspector and/or Commercial Electrical Inspector with the Department of Safety and Professional Services; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and licensing which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
• Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of building and electrical codes.
• Thorough knowledge of State and City building codes and City zoning ordinances.
• Knowledge of computer applications.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Ability to interpret quality of building materials and their application.
• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to investigate complaints and resolve them and or, if necessary, initiate appropriate legal action.
• Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license.

(2) Electrical inspectors. Any person appointed to do electrical inspections shall:
a. Be a competent electrician and have at least six (6) years of experience as a journeyman in the practice of his trade or four (4) years of training in a recognized college of electrical engineering;
b. Have all the qualifications of a master electrician; and
c. Be well-versed in approved methods of electrical construction for safety of life and property, the statutes of the state relating to electrical work, the rules and regulations issued by the Industrial Commission of the State under the authority of the statutes, the National Board of Fire Underwriters and the National Safety Code of the Bureau of Standards.
