Job Summary

The Electrical Engineer provides technical support to the maintenance and modification of Amtrak's Passenger Car Equipment. The Electrical Engineer works with the Senior Manager Equipment Engineering to ensure all passenger cars are in compliance with all federal regulations. The Electrical Engineer leads the development and execution of engineering programs and processes to improve the quality and reliability of the equipment. 

Essential Functions
  • Leads and manages projects and analysis by utilizing available resources and team support to develop specifications and technical procedures for passenger rail equipment systems to ensure reliable, safe and functional operations. 
  • Provides design improvements related to equipment problems which are typically design flaws, retrofit and field modifications, and maintenance shortcomings.
  • Participates in field tests, safety inspections, and warranty programs for rolling stock programs.
  • Resolves field electrical problems with existing and new equipment.
  • Serves as Amtrak Rolling Stock Engineering liaison working with internal and external departments such as the FRA, State DOTs, NTSB, and APTA.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 3 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 5 years of relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and mechanical drawings for troubleshooting
  • Development experience with PLC, Microcontrollers and/or data collection devices.
  • Experience designing and assembling electrical system prototype devices
  • Ability to independently resolve technical problems and be proficient in technical correspondence.
  • Capable of effectively working with office professionals and craft personnel
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing shop and/or outside environment
  • Project management and analysis skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Federal Railroad Regulations including Roadway Worker Protection
  • Qualified or possess sufficient experience to be qualified in: NORAC; RWP; AMT-2 & AMT 23/27
  • Skilled in supervising railroad production operations
  • Expertise in all facets of Track inspection, maintenance, and construction including but not limited to the installation of C&S applications as well as working knowledge of other crafts involved. 

The salary/hourly range is $86,500.00 - $111,996.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
