What is a contract job for an electrical engineer?

Electrical Engineer Contracts are temporary or project-based employment arrangements where electrical engineers are hired to design, develop, or oversee electrical systems for a specific period or project. Unlike full-time roles, contract positions often focus on specialized tasks, such as power distribution, circuit design, or equipment testing. Contractors may work for engineering firms, construction companies, or directly with clients, and their contracts typically outline project scope, duration, and deliverables. This type of role offers flexibility and the opportunity to work on diverse projects, but may not include the same benefits as permanent employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer on a contract basis?

To excel as a contract Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and professional licensing such as a PE or EIT certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, and electrical design or simulation tools is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you manage project demands and collaborate with diverse teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality technical solutions on time and meeting the specific requirements of each contract assignment.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineers working on contract assignments, and how can they be managed?

Contract electrical engineers often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new project environments, understanding different company standards, and meeting tight deadlines. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong communication skills, proactively clarify expectations with your client or team, and maintain flexibility in your workflow. Building a network of industry contacts and staying updated on the latest technologies can also help contract engineers integrate smoothly and deliver high-quality results.

Job description

*This position is contingent upon contract award*

Amentum is seeking a skilled and driven Senior Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team based in Houston, TX. This is a design-focused role that spans the full product lifecycle - from early concept development through hardware design, fabrication, installation, and on-site operation.

The ideal candidate is a licensed or degree-qualified electrical or systems engineer who brings expertise in low voltage electronics, wiring systems, sensor integration, and harness design, and who communicates and collaborates effectively across engineering and operations teams.

This position offers the opportunity to lead and participate in design reviews, work alongside vendors to bring electrical hardware from schematic to reality, and provide direct technical support during field installation and testing. If you are looking for a role where your engineering decisions have real, visible consequences on mission-critical systems, this is the opportunity for you.

This team supports multiple US Navy research and development facilities associated with top priority submarine weapon system development programs. The facilities are one-of-a-kind and provide a capability not found anywhere else in the DoD. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a dynamic and fast-paced environment and is willing to tackle problems that span the hardware lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:
Electrical Design & Analysis

  • Lead electrical design efforts from concept development through detailed design, fabrication support, and on-site commissioning.
  • Develop and review wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, harness drawings, and interconnect documentation using CAD/EDA tools (AutoCAD Electrical, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, Zuken, or equivalent).
  • Perform electrical analysis including power budgets, voltage drop, signal integrity, and harness load calculations to validate designs meet system requirements.
  • Evaluate designs for manufacturability, reliability, and compliance with applicable electrical standards and codes.
  • Drive projects through the full lifecycle - from initial concept and requirements definition through fabrication, installation, testing, and operational turnover.

Low Voltage Systems, Sensors & Harnesses

  • Apply engineering expertise in low voltage circuit design, sensor integration, signal conditioning, and wiring harness development for complex system applications.
  • Develop and review harness and cable assembly drawings, connector specifications, and routing layouts that comply with applicable workmanship and design standards.
  • Troubleshoot low voltage circuits, sensor faults, and harness anomalies using standard test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, and signal analyzers).
  • Select and specify sensors, connectors, cables, and associated hardware appropriate for the operating environment and system requirements.

Design Review & Work Package Support

  • Lead and actively participate in formal design reviews (PDR, CDR, and peer reviews), ensuring technical rigor, safety compliance, and design completeness.
  • Review work packages, installation procedures, and test plans for electrical systems to confirm accuracy, completeness, and alignment with engineering intent prior to field execution.
  • Evaluate proposed design changes and engineering change orders for technical feasibility, signal integrity impact, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, systems, and software engineers to ensure electrical designs integrate effectively within the broader system architecture.

Vendor Coordination & Fabrication Support

  • Work directly with vendors and harness fabricators to communicate design intent, clarify wiring and connector requirements, and ensure hardware is manufactured to specification.
  • Review vendor submittals, harness drawings, and material certifications to verify conformance with design and workmanship requirements (IPC/WHMA-A-620 or equivalent).
  • Support procurement activities by developing specifications, statements of work, and technical evaluation criteria for electrical hardware and fabrication services.
  • Coordinate factory acceptance testing and inspection activities to validate electrical assembly quality prior to delivery.

Technical Reporting & Documentation

  • Develop troubleshooting plans for on-site issues, provide instructions for on-site team for issue resolution
  • Write and review technical reports documenting electrical system performance, design analyses, test results, and issue identification and resolution.
  • Produce clear, accurate engineering documentation including design memos, field reports, and lessons-learned summaries for program records.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate proactively with project managers, fellow engineers, field technicians, and operations staff to plan and execute work efficiently.
  • Communicate technical findings, project status, and risk items clearly and concisely to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical resource and collaborative partner across disciplines, fostering a team environment built on transparency and shared accountability.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Systems Engineering (or similar) from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Minimum 13 years of electrical engineering experience encompassing circuit/system design, analysis, and project lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency with CAD/EDA tools for electrical schematic and wiring diagram development (AutoCAD Electrical, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, Zuken, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience with low voltage systems, sensor integration, and wiring harness design.
  • Strong ability to read and produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, harness drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey technical content clearly to diverse audiences and produce professional engineering documentation.
  • Ability to work in field environments, including industrial and outdoor settings, as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ruggedized or defense-grade electrical systems, connectors (MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-26482, or similar), and harness workmanship standards (IPC/WHMA-A-620).
  • Background in aerospace, defense, shipboard, or energy sector programs.
  • Experience leading design reviews (PDR/CDR) and managing electrical hardware through formal change control processes.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and design standards such as NFPA 70E, MIL-STD-461 (EMC), or MIL-HDBK-522.
  • Experience mentoring or guiding junior engineers or technicians.

Security & Clearance:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S government security clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a U.S government security clearance.

Work Environment:

  • This position is based in Houston, TX. Travel expected is approximately 33% of working time and is typically planned well in advance. The role involves a blend of office-based design and analysis work with periodic field presence during installation, testing, and commissioning activities, requiring the ability to work in varied environments including industrial and outdoor settings.
