What are Electrical Engineer Contracts?

Electrical Engineer Contracts are temporary or project-based employment arrangements where electrical engineers are hired to design, develop, or oversee electrical systems for a specific period or project. Unlike full-time roles, contract positions often focus on specialized tasks, such as power distribution, circuit design, or equipment testing. Contractors may work for engineering firms, construction companies, or directly with clients, and their contracts typically outline project scope, duration, and deliverables. This type of role offers flexibility and the opportunity to work on diverse projects, but may not include the same benefits as permanent employment.

What Are Contract Jobs for an Electrical Engineer?

Electrical engineer contract jobs include many of the same duties as a full-time electrical engineer position, but you work as a temporary employee during a fixed period, such as six months or a year. Your responsibilities vary based on the short-term needs of your employer, but you may design, test, and troubleshoot electrical equipment. You may also help other engineers with design plans and activities, check for technical accuracy, ensure quality electrical design, provide feedback, and guide other engineers with work on electronics on a project-by-project basis. You may also help budget and manage the electrical aspects of a project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer on a contract basis, and why are they important?

To excel as a contract Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and professional licensing such as a PE or EIT certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, and electrical design or simulation tools is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you manage project demands and collaborate with diverse teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality technical solutions on time and meeting the specific requirements of each contract assignment.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineers working on contract assignments, and how can they be managed?

Contract electrical engineers often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new project environments, understanding different company standards, and meeting tight deadlines. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong communication skills, proactively clarify expectations with your client or team, and maintain flexibility in your workflow. Building a network of industry contacts and staying updated on the latest technologies can also help contract engineers integrate smoothly and deliver high-quality results.

Salary: $117,000 - $194,000 + Comprehensive Benefits Package

Position Overview
This is an opportunity for an Electrical Engineer who wants more than production work and repetitive design cycles. In this role, you will lead the design and execution of sophisticated electrical systems across major K-12 and higher education projects-helping shape the environments where future generations learn, collaborate, and grow. You'll serve as both a technical authority and a trusted client-facing advisor, balancing engineering excellence with project leadership and mentorship.
The firm offers the structure and resources of an established MEP powerhouse while maintaining the collaborative feel of a highly connected engineering studio. Engineers are given real autonomy, direct client exposure, and the opportunity to contribute beyond pure design work. From mentoring junior staff to participating in industry events and strategic growth initiatives, this role is designed for engineers who want long-term influence-not just another production seat.
Core Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and coordination of electrical building systems, including power distribution, emergency power, lighting controls, fire alarm systems, and integrated technology infrastructure
  • Perform and oversee engineering calculations, system layouts, and construction documentation using Revit and AutoCAD
  • Manage multiple MEP projects simultaneously, maintaining accountability for schedules, budgets, technical quality, and client expectations
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to EITs, designers, and junior engineering staff
  • Review shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and final contract documents to ensure compliance with applicable codes and project requirements
  • Coordinate closely with Mechanical, Electrical, & Plumbing (MEP), architectural, and structural teams to ensure integrated project delivery
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and industry events, acting as a trusted advisor and representative of the firm
  • Conduct field investigations, site visits, and construction-phase support to verify existing conditions and ensure design intent is maintained during construction
  • Support QA/QC initiatives and contribute to ongoing improvements in engineering standards and project delivery workflows

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; EIT candidates with a strong path toward licensure will also be considered
  • Experience: Proven experience managing MEP projects independently within a consulting engineering environment
  • Software: Advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and applicable electrical engineering analysis software
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of power distribution, lighting systems, fire alarm systems, and building systems coordination
  • Communication: Ability to lead client interactions and communicate technical concepts clearly across multidisciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience within K-12 or higher education project environments
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record and sealing contract documents
  • Prior involvement in client-facing business development or industry networking initiatives
  • Understanding of project financials, scheduling, and operational coordination within an engineering firm

About the Firm
The firm is a recognized leader in MEP engineering, delivering innovative and reliable building systems throughout Texas. With deep expertise in educational facilities, the firm combines technical precision with a culture centered on mentorship, collaboration, and long-term professional growth. Engineers are encouraged to take ownership of their work, engage directly with clients, and contribute to meaningful projects that positively impact communities across the state.
