Job description

Job purpose:

To provide on shift maintenance of electrical systems, utilizing knowledge of industrial electricity and PLCs.  This position requires working on rotating swing shifts.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Follow all maintenance JSA’s, and SSAB’s safety policies
  • Maintain and troubleshoot medium and low voltage control systems and power distribution
  • Repair and maintain all electrical equipment in Reheat, Rolling Mill, Finishing and Shipping areas 
  • Utilize PLC’s to diagnose problems related to plant equipment
  • Perform PM’s on area equipment
  • Perform Lockout / Tagout of equipment
  • Implement software changes to improve processes
  • Install new equipment related to projects 
  • Maintain plant building services, overhead lighting, heat trace circuits, 120/208V and 480V electrical distribution
  • Maintain and install equipment in 480 Volt 3 phase power distribution systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance on DC motors and low and medium voltage equipment
  • Trouble shoot and tune control loops on proportional and servo valve applications
  • Maintain and install video equipment
  • Engineer, Design, install and commission new equipment and control systems
  • Use IBA data collection system to aid in diagnosing problems

Qualifications: Education and Experience:

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or GED/HSET equivalent

Preferred Education:

  • Journeyman Card
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology

Required Experience:

  • Strong electrical background
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial electrical experience
  • PLC programming and troubleshooting skills
  • AC and DC Digital Drive experience
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical schematics
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code and NFPA 70E Standards
  • Computer skills – including Microsoft Office tools
  • Ability to operate man lifts and JLGs
  • Self-motivated team player

Preferred Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience in metals industry
  • Experience in Programming languages – C, C++
  • Oracle database experience
  • Allen Bradley AC and DC Drive experience
  • Allen Bradley PLC5 and Control Logix 5000 experience
  • Allen Bradley HMI experience
  • Siemens DC Drive 6RA70 series drives experience
  • Understanding of Rolling Mill, Leveling and Slitting theory
  • Furnace and Burner control equipment and Roll grinding equipment experience
  • Gama Ray Gauge Measuring equipment experience

Working conditions:

The employee will frequently be required to:

  • Sit, walk, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Reach above shoulder level and below waist level
  • Use both hands for grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures
  • Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Close, distance and peripheral vision
  • Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:

  • Position is a full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtime
  • Position works rotating 12-hour swing shifts to include days and nights
