CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, construction sites, manufacturing facilitiesDesign offices, research labs, project management environments
ResponsibilitiesCreating electrical schematics, layouts, and specificationsDesigning systems, analyzing requirements, overseeing implementation
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, consulting firmsEngineering firms, industrial plants, infrastructure projects

Electrical Designers focus on creating detailed electrical plans and layouts, often working under the guidance of engineers. Electrical Engineers have a broader role involving system design, analysis, and project oversight, often requiring licensure. Both roles are essential in electrical projects but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are some common collaboration points between Electrical Designers and other engineering disciplines during a project?

Electrical Designers frequently collaborate with mechanical, structural, and civil engineering teams to ensure that electrical systems integrate smoothly with overall building and infrastructure designs. This often involves coordinating on aspects like equipment placement, routing of wiring and conduits, and compliance with safety and building codes. Effective communication and regular meetings are essential to resolve design conflicts early and ensure that all systems work together efficiently. This collaborative environment helps Electrical Designers gain broader project insight and can open up opportunities for interdisciplinary career growth.

What Is an Electrical Designer?

An electrical designer’s duties are to design electrical systems for installation in residential, commercial, or industrial locations and ensure that these systems meet health and safety codes. You must also ensure they do not conflict with other systems being installed. Your responsibilities include drawing or drafting sketches, plans, or layouts for the electrical systems in a development and discussing the feasibility of the plans with contractors and electricians. The contractors follow your sketches and blueprints to install the lighting and power systems. An electrical designer also creates plans for constructing high voltage systems, such as equipment for extending transmission lines or connecting a power control panel.

What does an Electrical Designer do?

An Electrical Designer creates detailed electrical systems and layouts for buildings, machinery, or products. They prepare technical drawings and specifications, select appropriate materials, and ensure designs comply with safety codes and industry standards. Electrical Designers often collaborate with engineers, architects, and other professionals throughout the design and construction process. Their work helps ensure electrical systems are efficient, reliable, and safe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, drafting techniques, and relevant codes, usually backed by a degree or diploma in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Revit), electrical design tools, and familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with engineers, architects, and project teams. These competencies are essential for producing accurate, safe, and efficient electrical system designs that meet project and regulatory standards.

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Sr. Industrial Electrical Engineer to guide and deliver electrical and controls design solutions for industrial process control projects. This role leads a team of designers and engineers to produce compliant, constructible electrical and instrumentation designs from concept through commissioning. The successful candidate will ensure adherence to NEC, IEC and UL508A standards, manage controls integration, and deliver accurate AutoCAD Electrical 2023+ drawings, loop diagrams, calculations and power distribution documentation.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of electrical designers and engineers; establish priorities, assign tasks, and review deliverables to meet project schedules and quality standards.
  • Oversee preparation and delivery of electrical design documents including single-line diagrams, power distribution diagrams, motor control schematics, and panel layouts in AutoCAD Electrical 2023+.
  • Ensure designs comply with NEC and IEC codes and UL508A standards; maintain and enforce corporate and client standards and good engineering practice.
  • Develop and review loop drawings, instrument wiring and termination details, and electrical/instrumentation interconnects to support process control systems.
  • Perform and check electrical calculations for conductor sizing, short-circuit/coordination, voltage drop, load analysis and protective device selection.
  • Lead controls integration activities: coordinate integration of PLCs, I/O, field devices and control panels with electrical and instrumentation teams.
  • Coordinate with instrumentation, process and mechanical disciplines to ensure accurate P&IDs, cable schedules, and interface documentation.
  • Provide technical oversight for panel design, panel BOMs and support UL508A panel build requirements and documentation.
  • Conduct design reviews, constructability reviews and quality assurance checks; resolve design issues and field queries during procurement and construction phases.
  • Support procurement by preparing technical specifications, reviewing vendor drawings, and evaluating electrical equipment and panel submittals.
  • Participate in commissioning support and troubleshooting, providing field guidance and revisions to drawings as required.
  • Promote continuous improvement by developing standard details, templates, and best practices for electrical design and documentation.

Qualifications

  • AS, BS, or MS Degree
  • 7+ years of progressive electrical design experience, with team leadership responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated expertise with NEC and IEC codes and UL508A standards and their application to panel and plant designs.
  • Proven experience with AutoCAD Electrical 2023+ for producing schematic, wiring, and layout documentation.
  • Strong background in electrical and instrumentation design for industrial/process facilities, including development of loop drawings and P&IDs.
  • Proficient in electrical calculations: conductor sizing, short-circuit and coordination studies, voltage drop and protective device selection.
  • Experience with power distribution systems, motor control centers, and panel layouts.
  • Hands-on experience with controls integration and PLC interface requirements; ability to work with PLC vendors and integrators.
  • Excellent team leadership, communication and client-facing skills; capable of mentoring junior staff and leading cross-discipline coordination.
  • Familiarity with industrial process control concepts and field instrumentation.
  • Nice to have: experience with Hazardous Area design and classification (e.g., NEC/IEC hazardous area standards).
  • Nice to have: direct experience integrating PLC systems and control panels in process plant environments.
