What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Design Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To excel as an Electrical Design Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and a relevant academic background in electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium Designer), simulation tools, and basic programming or PCB design is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns contribute meaningfully to design projects and collaborate with teams. These skills ensure accurate, innovative designs and smooth project execution, laying a strong foundation for a future engineering career.

What types of projects and daily tasks can an Electrical Design Engineer Intern expect to work on?

As an Electrical Design Engineer Intern, you will typically assist in creating schematic diagrams, updating CAD drawings, and performing basic circuit calculations under the guidance of senior engineers. You may also be involved in prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting components, as well as documenting design changes. Interns often collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as mechanical engineers and project managers, to ensure design integration and project timelines are met. This hands-on experience helps build both technical skills and an understanding of real-world engineering workflows.

What does an Electrical Design Engineer Intern do?

An Electrical Design Engineer Intern assists in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components under the supervision of experienced engineers. Their tasks often include creating and reviewing technical drawings, performing calculations, building prototypes, and supporting documentation processes. Interns gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software and tools while learning about safety standards and industry regulations. This role provides valuable exposure to the design process and helps interns develop practical engineering skills for future careers.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Engineer Intern vs Electrical Engineer?

Job description

Staff Electrical Design Engineer, EPC

The Staff Electrical Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end electrical design of industrial, offices, and lab facilities across multiple locations. The role holds full ownership of electrical deliverables - from concept through construction - across a diverse range of project types including hazardous occupancy, recycling facilities, office and labs, warehouse environments, and 34.5 kV/24.9 kV site infrastructure. The engineer is expected to operate with a high degree of independence, serving as Electrical Engineer of Record on assigned projects while coordinating across multiple disciplines to deliver code-compliant, construction-ready packages on schedule and within budget. This position requires a licensed Professional Engineer who is not only highly skilled at performing complex engineering calculations but also motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of communicating effectively at all levels - from field teams to executive stakeholders.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design and own a wide range of electrical systems - including medium voltage (up to 34.5 kV) feeds, low voltage power distribution, lighting, raceway, grounding, and communications.
  • Serve as Electrical Engineer of Record and responsible for producing permit and construction drawings.
  • Perform power system studies including short-circuit analysis, arc flash calculations, and protective device coordination using SKM or ETAP to ensure safe and code-compliant designs.
  • Perform cable ampacity calculations using AmpCalc or similar software to optimize cable size instead of using prescriptive tables from National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Lead multi-discipline coordination with architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, fire & life safety, and other design teams to produce complete Issue for Construction (IFC) packages.
  • Review conceptual designs from manufacturing engineers and stakeholders to identify technical and financial risks. Prepare electrical specifications and conduct technical bid evaluations for designs produced by external design consultants.
  • Lead code analysis for NEC, IECC, and applicable NFPA standards across all project deliverables, and ensure designs meet all regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Provide construction administration support including RFI responses, submittal reviews, change order management, and on-site inspections. Serve as the technical point of contact during construction and commissioning.
  • Prepare engineering cost estimates and project schedules, perform QA/QC reviews of electrical designs, and mentor junior engineers while contributing to internal design standards and best practices.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET accredited program.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity. Must get their PE in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in heavy commercial and industrial sectors, with evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Subject matter expertise in National Electrical Code (NEC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC),  and relevant National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards with demonstrated ability to lead code analysis and apply requirements across complex, multi-discipline projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and SKM or ETAP for design production, clash detection, document review, and power system studies.
  • Advanced proficiency in AmpCalc or similar for cable ampacity calculations. Ability to perform photometric studies using lighting design software such as Visual or AGI and make decisions on optimal lighting levels for projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to independently manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and deliver high-quality engineering documents on schedule.
  • Ability to travel to project sites for construction administration, commissioning support, and field issue resolution, with flexibility to adjust availability based on project phase demands.
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, written, and through drawings/sketches - with the ability to collaborate across disciplines and interface confidently at an executive level.Â
