Job description

Description:

About Us:

At Tomball Controls, we specialize in manufacturing custom fuel tanks, custom sound attenuated enclosures, and access platforms for emergency power generators.

We are proud to serve clients across various industries, providing them with high-quality power packaging solutions to meet their specific requirements. With years of experienced team members and a commitment to excellence, we have built a reputation for delivering reliable and durable products on time and within budget.

Job Description:

Tomball Controls is establishing an in-house Electrical Control Panel Shop as part of a strategic initiative to bring panel fabrication and assembly under our direct control. Today, completed panels are sourced from external vendors; by building this capability internally, we aim to improve quality, reduce lead times, and increase operational efficiency.

Because this is a new department, the individual hired for this role will have a unique opportunity to help shape its structure, processes, and long-term success from the ground up.

This position offers flexibility and will be tailored to the strengths and experience of the successful candidate:

  • Engineering & Design Focus: Candidates with strong electrical design and drafting expertise may focus on panel engineering, electrical schematics, bill of materials (BOM) development, and technical documentation, while working alongside a dedicated production lead responsible for fabrication and assembly.
  • Engineering & Production Leadership Focus: Candidates with both engineering knowledge and hands-on manufacturing experience may take ownership of the complete panel lifecycle, including design, assembly, testing, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and coordination with procurement and suppliers.

In either capacity, you will collaborate closely with Engineering, Purchasing, and Operations to develop this new department and deliver high-quality control panels that meet customer specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Panel Shop Development

  • Evaluate and recommend the equipment, tooling, and software needed to stand up an in-house electrical control panel fabrication operation.
  • Develop electrical panel drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or equivalent drafting tools.
  • Establish wiring standards, assembly procedures, and quality checkpoints for panel builds.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for panel assemblies, coordinating with Purchasing on vendor selection and component sourcing.
  • Support or directly manage panel assembly, wiring, and functional testing depending on role configuration.
  • Build out QA/QC processes for completed panel assemblies, including inspection checklists and acceptance criteria.

Engineering & Drafting

  • Produce and maintain electrical drawings and panel layouts that support production and serve as the official record of as-built configurations.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering team to align panel designs with broader product requirements and documentation standards.
  • Develop drafting templates and design standards that reduce rework and improve consistency across projects.
  • Translate customer specifications and engineering requirements into clear, buildable panel designs.

Procurement & Operations Coordination

  • Partner with Purchasing to develop an approved vendor list for enclosures, wire, terminals, circuit protection, and panel components.
  • Support inventory planning for shop consumables and stocked components.
  • Track shop throughput and flag capacity constraints or quality issues to leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in electrical panel design, controls engineering, electrical drafting, or hands-on panel assembly and wiring.
  • Working knowledge of electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
  • Familiarity with NEC standards and common panel components, including PLCs, drives, relays, terminal blocks, circuit protection, and enclosures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and customer specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a startup-style environment.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar electrical drafting software.
  • Experience standing up or reorganizing a production cell, shop, or department.
  • Experience with ERP or MRP systems for BOM management and purchasing workflows.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD tools is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to work in a manufacturing shop environment, including exposure to noise, heat, and industrial equipment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and work at a workbench for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on occasion.
  • Prolonged computer use for design, documentation, and communication tasks.
