What is an electrical category manager?

An Electrical Category Manager is a procurement professional responsible for overseeing the sourcing, negotiation, and management of electrical products and services within an organization. They analyze market trends, develop supplier relationships, and create strategies to optimize cost, quality, and supply chain efficiency for electrical goods. Their role often includes collaborating with engineering, operations, and finance teams to ensure the business has the right electrical materials at the best value. Electrical Category Managers play a key part in achieving organizational goals by driving value and innovation in the electrical procurement category.

How does an electrical category manager typically collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to optimize procurement strategies?

An Electrical Category Manager works closely with suppliers to negotiate contracts, ensure quality standards, and maintain strong business relationships. Internally, they partner with engineering, operations, and procurement teams to understand project requirements, align on budgets, and implement cost-saving initiatives. This cross-functional collaboration is essential for identifying opportunities for process improvement, consolidating spend, and driving value across the supply chain. Regular meetings, data analysis, and market research are key parts of the role, enabling the Category Manager to make informed decisions and support organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical category manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Category Manager, you need expertise in procurement, category management, and a strong understanding of electrical products and markets, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in supply chain or purchasing. Familiarity with ERP systems, advanced Excel skills, and certifications like CIPS or CPSM are commonly required. Strong negotiation, analytical thinking, and relationship management skills help you excel in vendor interactions and cross-functional teamwork. These skills are crucial for optimizing sourcing strategies, reducing costs, and ensuring a competitive and reliable supply of electrical products.

Key responsibilities

  • Own and manage the electrical category by negotiating capacity reservations with OEMs, managing design implications, tracking factory slots, and maintaining current lead time information.

  • Own and manage the steel category by sourcing fabrication capacity, negotiating pricing, qualifying fabricators, and load-balancing across regional shops.

  • Coordinate with suppliers and engineering teams to ensure timely procurement and delivery of electrical and steel equipment in support of construction schedules.

Job description

About the company

Our client builds AI compute infrastructure at gigawatt scale, delivering one of the largest data centre programmes in the world. Their advantage is a modular build that goes up faster than anything else in the industry โ€” and that speed depends entirely on supply chain.

The mandate for this team is blunt: keep procurement permanently off the critical path.

We are hiring two Category Managers, one for each category below. Both roles are titled Sourcing Manager internally.

Category Manager โ€” Electrical

You will own the electrical category โ€” switchgear, transformers, UPS, generators and busway. These are the longest lead times in the entire build, which makes this the category most capable of setting or breaking the schedule.

  • Negotiate capacity reservations with electrical OEMs years ahead of need, converting reservations to firm orders as the pipeline hardens
  • Dual-source major equipment classes across OEMs whose products are not interchangeable, managing the design implications with engineering
  • Track factory slots and production milestones supplier by supplier
  • Maintain a real, current view of lead times by product class

Requirements

  • Experience sourcing major electrical equipment (switchgear, transformers, UPS, generation) for large construction programmes
  • Track record of reserving factory capacity ahead of firm designs, and managing the commercial risk this creates
  • Proven ability to expedite equipment through a factory

Desirable: MV/HV equipment ยท utility-scale generation ยท OFCI programmes ยท factory witness testing

Category Manager โ€” Steel

You will own the steel category โ€” structural steel and fabricated assemblies feeding both the modular manufacturing line and the site builds. The core of the job is running a network of regional fabrication shops as production capacity, rather than bidding out packages job by job.

  • Source fabrication capacity across regional shops, so throughput scales with the build plan rather than one shop's backlog
  • Negotiate raw material and fabrication pricing with mechanisms that survive commodity swings
  • Qualify fabricators on quality and capacity, and load-balance across them weekly

Requirements

  • Experience sourcing structural steel or fabricated steel assemblies at industrial volume
  • Strong grasp of fabrication economics โ€” material, labour, coatings and freight โ€” and where each shop makes its margin
  • Experience qualifying fabrication shops, including identifying overstated capacity
  • Commodity exposure managed through indexing or hedging

Desirable: AISC-certified fabrication networks ยท modular construction ยท weld quality programmes ยท oversize load logistics

Background

A data centre background is not required for either role.

For the electrical role, these skills transfer from utilities and IPPs, renewables and generation developers, semiconductor fab and gigafactory programmes, and heavy EPC. If you have fought for a transformer slot in this market, you already understand the hard part.

For the steel role, they transfer from any environment running an outsourced fabrication network at volume โ€” heavy equipment and machinery OEMs buying large weldments, wind tower and utility structure manufacturers, process skid and module fabricators, solar tracker manufacturers, or modular construction.
