Job description

The University of Virginia's Health System Physical Plant is seeking an Electrician or Senior Electrical Assistant to join their team. The incumbent is responsible for responding to renovation projects and support to maintenance work orders within the Health System Complex. This position will be filled at either level based on the selected finalist's credentials and experience.
Electricians provide labor and technical knowledge for installation and maintenance of building components and mechanical systems while providing a safe environment. Electricians perform work of moderate difficulty which involves repairing, installing, connecting, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment in buildings. Senior Electrical Assistants may work independently or alongside licensed Electricians, performing repairs, preventive maintenance, and small installations while developing skills through hands-on experience and mentorship.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform installation, repair, and preventive maintenance on electrical systems, panels, motors, and controls across UVA Housing facilities
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues, ensuring all work meets NEC, OSHA, and UVA safety standards
  • Maintain accurate documentation, material tracking, and work order notes
  • Communicate effectively with customers and supervisors regarding work progress and priorities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for electrical issues within the zone while also participating in a robust cross-training program that builds team flexibility across HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and other building systems
  • Participate in snow response and emergency call rotations as assigned

Additional Responsibilities - Electrician Level:
  • Lead electrical installations and perform advanced diagnostics with minimal supervision
  • Estimate labor, materials, and time for assigned projects
  • Mentor assistants and apprentices on proper practices, troubleshooting, and safety procedures
  • Ensure full code compliance for new installations and system modifications

Required Qualifications for Senior Electrical Assistant:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Four years of experience in a relevant trade
  • Licensure: Valid driver's license

Required Qualifications for Electrician:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Four years in the electrical trade
  • Licensure: Journeyman or Master Electrician license; Valid driver's license.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.
Compensation:
  • Senior Electrical Assistant: $21.00 to $25.00 per hour ($43,680 to $52,000 Annually)
  • Electrician: $24.50 to $29.50 per hour ($50,960 to $61,360 Annually)
