Work EnvironmentControl centers, monitoring grid operations, ensuring system reliabilityField and control room settings, coordinating power flow and dispatching
Industry UsageUsed by utilities, grid operators, and independent system operators (ISOs)Primarily employed by utilities and grid operators for real-time power management

The Electric System Operator and Power Dispatcher roles both focus on maintaining the reliability and efficiency of the electrical grid. Both roles are essential for a secure and reliable power supply.

What does an electric system operator do?

An electric system operator configures, operates, and monitors power plant systems to ensure reliability. As an electric system operator, your responsibilities include controlling and balancing the voltage generation of electrical power systems and the transmission of electrical power so that utility customers have access to reliable power. Your job duties include maintaining and repairing electrical systems, escalating operational issues to supervisors or technicians as needed, and restoring electrical systems after power failures or outages. You must work well both independently and as part of a team, paying attention to safety procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electric system operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electric System Operator, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a background in electrical engineering or a related technical field, often supported by NERC certification. Familiarity with SCADA systems, energy management software, and real-time monitoring tools is crucial. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help operators manage critical situations effectively. These competencies are vital to ensuring grid reliability, safety, and rapid response to emergencies in the power system.

What is an electric system operator?

Electric System Operators are professionals responsible for monitoring and controlling the flow of electricity through transmission and distribution networks. They ensure the reliable delivery of electricity by balancing supply and demand, responding to emergencies, and coordinating maintenance with other personnel. Their role is critical in preventing outages and maintaining the stability of the electrical grid. They often work in control centers using advanced technology and communication systems.

What are some common challenges electric system operators face when balancing supply and demand in real time?

Electric System Operators often encounter the challenge of maintaining grid reliability while responding to sudden changes in electricity demand, unexpected equipment failures, or fluctuations in renewable generation. Rapid decision-making and clear communication with power plants, transmission operators, and field crews are essential to prevent outages or instability. Operators must also stay vigilant during extreme weather events, which can increase system stress and require quick coordination across multiple teams.

Job description

About Rivian
Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
Our Autonomy Systems Validation's team is expanding, and we are looking for skilled Vehicle Operators with a focus on autonomous vehicle testing, data collection, and integration of development hardware and software. In this role, you will be responsible for operating, driving, troubleshooting, and evaluating our prototype test vehicles, including those equipped with autonomous systems, and documenting product development feedback for our engineering teams. This involves testing vehicles on public roads and private facilities, executing safety protocols, and performing specialized test procedures. You'll also work with hardware and software engineering teams as needed to help troubleshoot and debug software and hardware systems.
Responsibilities
• Safely operate test vehicles, including autonomous systems, in a wide range of testing conditions for up to 8 hours/day
• Perform vehicle prep work, including basic vehicle inspections, diagnostics, and setting up autonomous testing scenarios or test trips.
• Conduct tests and provide detailed feedback on performance, safety, and issues.
• Complete clear, concise, and detailed post-drive reports and online tickets, working with and escalating to engineers as necessary.
• Troubleshoot hardware and software issues and aid engineers in debugging through system diagnostics and safety protocols.
• Perform and verify OTA software updates for vehicle systems.
• Collect and share data from vehicle and logging systems for engineering analysis.
• Additional work and tasks as needed by the team.
Qualifications
• Ability to travel up to 50%
• Prior professional automotive driving or autonomous vehicle testing experience.
• Ability to drive safely in all conditions, including operating autonomous vehicles, alone or with a partner for 6-8 hours a day.
• Self-motivated, organized, and capable of good judgment in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
• Attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to describe events quickly and concisely.
• Proficiency using a smartphone, laptop, and Google tools (Docs, Sheets, Maps).
• Must be flexible to work overtime as needed.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Minimum age of 21.
• No driving related suspensions or revocation of Driver License (within a 3-5 year period).
• No drug or alcohol related driving incidents in the last 3 years.
• No more than 1 serious moving violation in the last 3 years.
• Must have a valid driver's license in the state of residence that you will be driving/operating a vehicle.
• Will be subject to continuous Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) monitoring.
• Availaiblity to work 2nd shift (4:30p - 1:00a, local time)
Bonus
• Experience with Jira.
• Experience driving 16 ft or larger vehicles.
• Valid Class A or B commercial driver's license.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting and debugging software and hardware programs in vehicles.
