What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electric Motor Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electric Motor Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, physics, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with design software such as CAD tools, finite element analysis (FEA) programs, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications (e.g., IEEE) are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in cross-functional teams and complex projects. These skills ensure innovative, efficient, and reliable motor designs that meet safety, performance, and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Electric Motor Design, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Electric Motor Design often face challenges such as optimizing energy efficiency while meeting size, weight, and cost constraints. Balancing these factors requires strong analytical skills and familiarity with simulation tools. Collaboration with manufacturing teams is essential to ensure designs are feasible and can be produced reliably. Staying updated with advancements in materials and control electronics can also help address evolving industry demands. Continuous professional development and working closely with multidisciplinary teams can make overcoming these challenges more manageable.

What is electric motor design?

Electric motor design is the process of creating and optimizing electric motors, which convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. This involves selecting materials, designing components like stators and rotors, and ensuring the motor meets specific performance requirements such as speed, torque, efficiency, and reliability. Electric motor designers use engineering principles, computer simulations, and prototyping to develop motors for applications ranging from household appliances to electric vehicles and industrial machinery. The goal is to produce motors that are efficient, cost-effective, and suitable for their intended use.

What is the difference between Electric Motor Design vs Electric Motor Testing?

AspectElectric Motor DesignElectric Motor Testing
Primary FocusCreating and developing new electric motor concepts and specificationsEvaluating and verifying motor performance through testing procedures
Required SkillsDesign software, electrical engineering, materials knowledgeTesting protocols, data analysis, instrumentation
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, CAD environments, R&D departmentsTest labs, manufacturing facilities, quality assurance
Common CertificationsPE, electrical engineering degrees, CAD certificationsTest engineer certifications, quality standards

Electric Motor Design focuses on creating new motor concepts, while Electric Motor Testing involves verifying motor performance. Both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and often work within similar environments, but their core responsibilities differ—designing versus testing motors.

Job description

At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.
Your mission
We are seeking a highly motivated Electric Motor Design Engineer to join our Propulsion team. You will lead the design and development of the HV electric motors for our aircraft's hybrid propulsion. You will interface across mechanical, thermal, power electronics, airframe, and battery teams to deliver a fully integrated and certifiable hybrid Electric Propulsion Unit (EPU).
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Design, develop, commission, and certificate innovative cutting-edge electric motors for hybrid propulsion system.
  • Lead and execute system-level tests, such as motor and propeller test stands.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure delivery of integrated, and certifiable subsystems.
  • Perform avionics-optimized electric motor topology trade studies.
  • Create 2D/3D CAD models of electric motors in drawing tools (e.g., Siemens NX).

You'll Bring These Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of professional experience designing high voltage, high power electric motors.
  • In depth understanding of permanent magnet motor design, principles, modeling, and analysis techniques.
  • Proficiency with JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, RMxpert, or MotorCAD.
  • Design and optimize electromagnetic active parts for manufacturing and certification.
  • Hands-on experience with integration of propulsion and/or powertrain test stands, including instrumentation, controls, and mechanical assembly.
  • Strong understanding of electric motors manufacturing processes such as stator winding, lamination stacking, and stator varnishing.
  • Strong knowledge of motor manufacturing, heat treatment, statics, dynamics and mechanics of materials.

These Qualifications Would Be Nice to Have:
  • Understanding of certification requirements (EASA CS-23/25 or FAA FAR Part 23/25).
  • Knowledge of aerospace airworthiness standards, e.g. DO-254, and DO-160.
  • Develop and maintain design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA).

Education:
  • Master's or PhD degree in Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or related fields.

Base Pay Range:
$124,000-$216,000 USD
