What are Election Consultants?

Election Consultants are professionals who provide expert advice and services to organizations, political parties, governments, or candidates involved in elections. Their responsibilities often include developing campaign strategies, advising on voter outreach, ensuring compliance with election laws, and sometimes overseeing election logistics. They use their knowledge of political systems, public opinion, and data analysis to help clients run effective and lawful campaigns. Election Consultants may also assist with crisis management and offer guidance on media relations during election cycles.

What are some common challenges Election Consultants face when working with clients during an election cycle?

Election Consultants often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, rapidly changing campaign strategies, and navigating complex regulatory requirements. The role requires balancing the interests and expectations of diverse stakeholders, including candidates, campaign staff, and external vendors. Consultants must remain adaptable, communicate clearly, and manage stress effectively, especially during peak campaign periods when long hours and quick decision-making are routine. Building trust and providing data-driven insights are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering successful outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Election Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Election Consultant, you need expertise in political science, election laws, and campaign management, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in electoral processes. Familiarity with data analytics software, voter database systems, and digital communication tools is typically required. Outstanding analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills help you advise clients and navigate complex political environments. These skills ensure effective election strategies, compliance with regulations, and successful outcomes for candidates or organizations.

What is the difference between Election Consultant vs Campaign Strategist?

AspectElection ConsultantCampaign Strategist

Work EnvironmentConsults with candidates, parties, or organizations during election cycles; often freelance or agency-basedWorks directly on campaign planning, messaging, and voter outreach; employed by campaigns or consulting firms
Industry UsageCommonly hired during election seasons to advise on strategy and complianceIntegral to campaign teams, focusing on overall campaign strategy and voter engagement

While both roles involve political strategy, Election Consultants primarily advise on election-specific issues, compliance, and voter outreach, often working independently or with agencies. Campaign Strategists develop comprehensive campaign plans, messaging, and voter targeting, working closely with campaign teams. Understanding these differences helps candidates and organizations choose the right professional for their election needs.

The Election Sales Account Executive will drive growth across the Western Region by developing new election-related business, expanding relationships with county election offices and public-sector partners, and identifying revenue opportunities within assigned accounts. This role requires an experienced sales professional who understands the importance of accuracy, security, deadlines, and trust in election work. The ideal candidate can consult with clients on ballot printing, vote-by-mail materials, election notices, envelopes, forms, and related print and mailing solutions while coordinating closely with internal teams to support successful election-cycle delivery. Territory includes ten Western states.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic sales plans to grow election-related revenue across the Western Region, with a focus on county election offices, public agencies, and approved public-sector partners.
  • Identify and pursue new election business through targeted outreach, referrals, industry events, bid opportunities, and ongoing market research.
  • Build trusted relationships with election officials and their teams, administrators, and other key stakeholders by understanding their deadlines, procedures, compliance needs, and service expectations.
  • Consult with clients on ballot printing, vote-by-mail packets, envelopes, inserts, voter guides, election notices, forms, and related print and mailing solutions.
  • Prepare accurate quotes, proposals, timelines, RFP responses, RFIs, and RFQs that reflect election-cycle requirements, production capacity, mailing schedules, and delivery deadlines.
  • Coordinate closely with estimating, prepress, production, data processing, mailing, fulfillment, quality control, and customer service teams to support accurate and on-time election project delivery.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of election print and mail workflows, including proofing, variable data, ballot package components, chain-of-custody expectations, postal requirements, and deadline-sensitive production.
  • Monitor upcoming election cycles, jurisdiction needs, procurement calendars, and contract renewal opportunities to support proactive account planning and pipeline growth.
  • Maintain accurate CRM records, sales activity notes, opportunity forecasts, bid status updates, and account plans for assigned election accounts.
  • Represent the company at election conferences, association meetings, vendor events, and client visits to strengthen relationships and expand awareness of the company's election print and mailing capabilities.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of progressive sales, account management, or business development experience, preferably in election services, public-sector sales, commercial print, direct mail, or other deadline-sensitive production environments.
  • Proven track record of growing revenue and managing long-term relationships with county election offices, government agencies, public-sector buyers, or other highly regulated clients.
  • Experience selling ballot printing, vote-by-mail materials, voter guides, election notices, envelopes, forms, direct mail, or similar high-accuracy print and mailing solutions preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex sales cycles involving RFPs, RFIs, RFQs, contracts, procurement calendars, multiple stakeholders, and strict election-cycle deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of consultative selling, territory development, pipeline management, forecasting, and account planning within a regional sales territory.
  • Familiarity with print production, mailing workflows, variable data, proofing, quality control, postal requirements, and secure handling expectations is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills with the ability to build trust with election officials, public-sector buyers, and internal production teams.
  • Strong understanding of election-related print and mail solutions, including ballots, vote-by-mail packets, envelopes, inserts, voter guides, notices, forms, variable data, proofing, and mailing requirements.
  • Ability to manage deadline-sensitive projects with a high level of accuracy, organization, follow-through, and attention to detail.
  • Strategic account planning skills, including territory development, pipeline management, forecasting, bid tracking, and contract renewal planning.
  • Proficient in CRM platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, proposal preparation, and maintaining accurate sales activity, opportunity, and account records.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, especially when coordinating quotes, schedules, proofs, data, postal requirements, and production timelines.
  • Ability to work independently across a multi-state territory while collaborating effectively with estimating, prepress, production, mailing, fulfillment, quality control, and customer service teams.
  • Professional judgement, confidentiality, and a service-oriented mindset appropriate for supporting election-related clients and time-sensitive public-sector work.

Education:
