ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting directly to the Inclusive Education Lead and Principal, the Inclusive Education Support Teacher assists in the implementation, coordination, and delivery of inclusive education services at Elsie Fabian School. Working collaboratively with classroom teachers, Educational Assistants, the School Counsellor, Numeracy Teacher & Instructional Coach, Literacy Educational Assistant, Birchwood clinicians, families, and administration, this position supports students with diverse academic, behavioural, social-emotional, communication, and developmental needs.


The Inclusive Education Support Teacher provides direct student support, assists with programming and intervention planning, supports IPP development and implementation, and helps coordinate services within the Inclusive Education Department. This position works under the direction of the Inclusive Education Lead.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Support & Intervention

  • Provide direct support to students through one-to-one, small-group, and classroom-based instruction and intervention.
  • Support students with identified academic, behavioural, social-emotional, communication, and self-regulation needs.
  • Provide targeted intervention for students requiring intensive support beyond universal classroom instruction.
  • Work directly with students requiring modified programming, accommodations, or individualized supports.
  • Assist students in developing independence, self-regulation, executive functioning, social skills, communication skills, and learning strategies.
  • Provide short-term intensive support for students experiencing behavioural, emotional, or learning challenges.
  • Support classroom teachers in implementing intervention plans and individualized supports.

Behaviour Support

  • Support implementation of Behaviour Support Plans and student intervention plans.
    Work collaboratively with administration, the School Counsellor, Birchwood clinicians, and classroom teachers to support students with behavioural needs.
  • Collect and maintain behavioural data, observations, and documentation.
  • Provide coaching and support to staff regarding behaviour intervention strategies, de-escalation techniques, self-regulation supports, and proactive classroom practices.
  • Assist in developing classroom supports and intervention strategies for students requiring additional behavioural assistance.
  • Support reintegration and transition plans following behavioural incidents, suspensions, extended absences, or alternative programming placements.

Programming & IPP Support

  • Support the Inclusive Education Lead and classroom teachers in the development, implementation, monitoring, and review of IPPs.
  • Assist with writing goals, accommodations, modifications, transition plans, and progress monitoring documentation.
  • Support classroom teachers in adapting curriculum, instructional materials, assessments, and learning activities to meet diverse student needs.
  • Develop and implement modified and individualized programming under the direction of the Inclusive Education Lead.
  • Assist with educational assessments, observations, data collection, and documentation to support programming decisions.
  • Monitor student progress and provide recommendations to the Inclusive Education Lead and classroom teachers.
  • Support Alberta Education coding processes through documentation and evidence collection.
  • Participate in collaborative team meetings, IPP meetings, case conferences, and transition planning meetings.
  • Assist with implementing recommendations from clinicians and external service providers.
  • Support communication between school staff, families, and service providers as directed by the Inclusive Education Lead.

Staff Support & Capacity Building

  • Support teachers in implementing accommodations, modifications, and inclusive instructional practices.
  • Model evidence-based strategies for supporting students with diverse learning and behavioural needs.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to Educational Assistants regarding student supports and intervention strategies.
  • Assist with professional learning and school-wide inclusive education initiatives.
  • Support staff in understanding and implementing recommendations from clinicians and support providers.

Transition Planning

  • Support transition planning for students moving between grades, programs, classrooms, and schools.
  • Participate in transition meetings and assist with preparation of transition documentation.
  • Coordinate the transfer of relevant student programming information as directed by the Inclusive Education Lead.

Administrative & Departmental Support

  • Assist the Inclusive Education Lead with student referrals, service coordination, scheduling, documentation, and departmental organization.
  • Maintain accurate student records and confidential documentation.
  • Assist in coordinating clinician visits, observations, meetings, and student support services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Inclusive Education Lead or Principal.


KEY REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Education. Additional coursework or specialization in Special Education, Inclusive Education, Educational Psychology, Behaviour Supports, or Learning Disabilities is considered an asset.

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioural, social-emotional, communication, and developmental needs.
  • Experience developing and implementing individualized programming and interventions.
  • Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Inclusive Education requirements, IPPs, accommodations, modifications, and intervention practices.
  • Experience working in Indigenous and First Nations educational settings is considered a strong asset.
