Their main goal is to develop clear, accurate, and engaging content that aligns with curriculum standards and helps students learn effectively. They often collaborate with educators, subject matter experts, and instructional designers to ensure the content meets educational objectives. Educational Content Writers may also adapt materials for different age groups or learning styles and stay updated on best practices in teaching and learning.

What does an educational content writer do?

As an educational content writer, your job is to develop educational material for teachers and students. This may involve creating lesson plans, helping plan a curriculum, researching material, or finding sources to back up any claims in the content. Most educational content writers focus specifically on published material sold to schools or similar educational institutions, as well as research and study guides sold in bookstores. This job should not be confused with writing general educational content like blog posts, including posts from or by academic companies. Many educational content writers specialize in specific areas, especially for material in the K-12th-grade range.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an educational content writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Educational Content Writer, you need strong writing, research, and curriculum development skills, often supported by a degree in education, English, or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), educational standards, and digital content creation tools like Adobe Creative Suite or Google Workspace is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are essential soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that educational materials are engaging, accurate, and accessible, effectively supporting diverse learner needs.

How does an educational content writer typically collaborate with subject matter experts during the content creation process?

Educational Content Writers frequently work alongside subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure accuracy and depth in their materials. This collaboration often involves conducting interviews, requesting feedback on drafts, and clarifying complex concepts to make them accessible for learners. Building strong relationships with SMEs is essential, as it helps writers produce content that is both pedagogically sound and factually correct. Open communication and adaptability are key, as writers may need to revise content based on expert input or curriculum changes.

Job description

Technical Writer (Oil and Gas) โ€“ Field Training & Competency (Mostly Remote)

Clarity is seeking an experienced Technical Writer with a strong training and operations background to develop field-based training for unconventional well operators and mechanics. This role focuses on creating clear, accurate, and instructionally sound materials that support both trainers and technicians in field environments. Ideal candidates bring hands-on operational experience combined with the ability to think, write, and communicate like a learning professional.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with SMEs and trainers to gather, validate, and refine technical content
  • Capture operational knowledge from SMEs and field personnel when documentation is limited and structure it into usable training content
  • Apply adult learning and instructional design principles to support knowledge transfer, skill development, and safe field performance
  • Develop performance verification criteria that define observable actions and knowledge required to confirm task competency in the field
  • Develop trainer notes, job aids, checklists, diagrams, and troubleshooting guidance aligned to real field conditions

Experience Required

  • Background developing training or technical documentation for upstream oil and gas operations
  • Familiarity with production operations, field equipment, facilities, or maintenance activities
  • Development of training materials used in field-based or instructor-led training environments
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation and operational procedures and translate them into effective training content
  • Experience working directly with SMEs and field-based teams to gather and validate technical information
  • Strong writing, organization, and attention to detail
  • Clear communication and ability to collaborate effectively with SMEs and stakeholders

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • A writer who is comfortable asking questions, facilitating SME discussions, and developing training content from field expertise rather than relying solely on existing documentation
  • Someone who understands field operations and can translate operational work into practical training materials
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with SMEs, trainers, and project stakeholders
  • A structured writer who can organize complex operational information into clear instructional materials

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: 6 months with possible extensions

Hours: up to 40 hours per week

Location: Remote within the United States with occasional travel to Texas or North Dakota (typically one to two trips per month for 2โ€“3 days).

NOTE: 100% Virtual Positions

Due to the nature of this virtual position, we anticipate a high number of responses from interested applicants. We may not be able to personally respond to your inquiry immediately but please know that your resume and email responses will be reviewed.

The pay range for this is $60.00 to $65.00 per hour. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, relevant education, certifications and specific work location.
