What does an Educational Content Writer do?

An Educational Content Writer creates learning materials such as textbooks, lesson plans, online courses, and assessments. Their main goal is to develop clear, accurate, and engaging content that aligns with curriculum standards and helps students learn effectively. They often collaborate with educators, subject matter experts, and instructional designers to ensure the content meets educational objectives. Educational Content Writers may also adapt materials for different age groups or learning styles and stay updated on best practices in teaching and learning.

How does an Educational Content Writer typically collaborate with subject matter experts during the content creation process?

Educational Content Writers frequently work alongside subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure accuracy and depth in their materials. This collaboration often involves conducting interviews, requesting feedback on drafts, and clarifying complex concepts to make them accessible for learners. Building strong relationships with SMEs is essential, as it helps writers produce content that is both pedagogically sound and factually correct. Open communication and adaptability are key, as writers may need to revise content based on expert input or curriculum changes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Educational Content Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Educational Content Writer, you need strong writing, research, and curriculum development skills, often supported by a degree in education, English, or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), educational standards, and digital content creation tools like Adobe Creative Suite or Google Workspace is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are essential soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that educational materials are engaging, accurate, and accessible, effectively supporting diverse learner needs.

What Does an Educational Content Writer Do?

As an educational content writer, your job is to develop educational material for teachers and students. This may involve creating lesson plans, helping plan a curriculum, researching material, or finding sources to back up any claims in the content. Most educational content writers focus specifically on published material sold to schools or similar educational institutions, as well as research and study guides sold in bookstores. This job should not be confused with writing general educational content like blog posts, including posts from or by academic companies. Many educational content writers specialize in specific areas, especially for material in the K-12th-grade range.

Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented Technical Content Writer to join our team and createindustry-focused sales collateral and customer success stories for our portfolio of valves, actuators, and control systems. In this role, you will use Microsoft Copilot and other tools to accelerate drafting, while ensuring the final content is accurate, compliant, and tailored to customer needs. The ideal candidate can quickly learn complex technical solutions, identify the business outcomes they enable, and translate that knowledge into clear, engaging, easy-to-consume content that helps our sales teams start and advance customer conversations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Create industry-focused collateral: Write and maintain solution briefs, one-pagers, application notes, pitch-ready product overviews, and FAQs that translate technical capabilities into customer outcomes.
  • Develop customer success stories: Plan, interview, and write customer stories/case studies that highlight business challenges, solution approach, measurable results, and customer quotes (with appropriate approvals).
  • Translate technical content for customer audiences: Turn specifications, engineering documentation, and SME input into clear, engaging messaging that is accurate and easy to scan for busy customer stakeholders.
  • Content design & production (InDesign): Use Adobe InDesign to build polished, customer-ready collateral using templates and style guidelines. Ensure content is easy to scan, visually clean, and consistent in voice; partner with design/marketing as needed for brand standards.
  • Quality & technical accuracy: Edit, proofread, and validate content with subject-matter experts to ensure correctness, clarity, and compliance with company/industry requirements.
  • Work with technical visuals: Coordinate with engineering and internal stakeholders to source, interpret, and incorporate drawings, schematics, and illustrations that support the narrative and accurately represent the solution.
  • Content operations & version control: Manage document versions, approvals, and publishing timelines; maintain a clear source of truth and enable reuse/refresh of content as products and messaging evolve.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work with product, engineering, sales, marketing, and field/service teams to gather inputs, align on positioning, and deliver content that supports the sales cycle.
  • Tools, visuals & AI-assisted drafting: Use Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 tools to accelerate outlines, first drafts, and rewrites. Use Adobe InDesign (expert level) to lay out final collateral, including placing and managing high-resolution images, diagrams, and supporting visuals. Apply sound judgment, fact-checking, and SME review to ensure high-quality final deliverables.
  • Sales enablement support: Create and update supporting assets (talk tracks, objection-handling FAQs, competitive/positioning notes, and light training materials) to help sales teams use collateral confidently and consistently.
  • Measure & improve: Gather feedback from sales and stakeholders, track recurring customer questions, and continuously improve content for clarity, impact, and usability.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). Technical coursework or experience in industrial domains is a plus.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical writing, content development, or sales enablement content-preferably in industrial/manufacturing environments (valves, actuators, controls, automation, instrumentation, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to understand highly technical material and translate it into customer-friendly content (clear, engaging, and action-oriented).
  • Experience gathering inputs via SME interviews and source materials, then producing polished deliverables such as case studies, solution briefs, and application-focused collateral.
  • Skills:
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to tailor tone for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to identify and articulate customer value (benefits, outcomes, ROI) from technical features and solution capabilities.
  • Expert proficiency with Adobe InDesign (required) and Microsoft 365 (Word, PowerPoint), including use of Microsoft Copilot or similar AI tools to accelerate drafting and revision while maintaining human review and technical validation.
  • Strong knowledge of document management systems and version control practices; able to manage reviews/approvals and keep stakeholders aligned.
  • Comfort with industrial products and applications (valves/actuation, control systems, automation/instrumentation, process industries); ability to read and synthesize technical specs.
  • Ability to interpret and work with engineering drawings, schematics, P&IDs, and technical illustrations; comfortable incorporating/redlining visuals with engineering support.
  • Experience placing, resizing, and optimizing high-resolution images and exporting customer-ready assets for digital and/or print distribution.
  • Personal Attributes:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; able to ask the right questions to fill gaps and reduce ambiguity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work with a variety of personalities, interview SMEs, pull content from multiple sources, and decipher ambiguous technical input into clear, accurate messaging.
  • Highly organized and self-directed-able to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and drive progress across the organization.
  • Detail-oriented and committed to producing high-quality, customer-ready content on deadline.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience creating content for technical industrial industries in a B2B environment (chemical, refining, power, mining, water/wastewater, pulp & paper, etc.).
  • Field experience (commissioning, maintenance, operations) or experience working for an end user is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with sales enablement practices and/or industry standards (ISO, ANSI, IEC) and regulated documentation requirements is a plus.
