This Designer will partner closely with editors, reporters, photographers, and product teams to conceive and execute ambitious visual presentations — from daily news packages to signature enterprise and feature projects.

At The Boston Globe, we are committed to independent, trustworthy journalism. Our design team plays a critical role in making that journalism resonate visually, emotionally, and intellectually with our audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Design engaging layouts and visual presentations for both print and digital news properties
  • Partner across the newsroom to conceive and execute features that extend and deepen the impact of our journalism
  • Design and build custom digital story elements using HTML and CSS, including visual modules, interactive features, and responsive layouts

  • Collaborate with product, engineering, and editorial teams to develop new digital storytelling tools and formats
  • Experiment with new storytelling formats, digital tools, and visual approaches
  • Translate complex reporting into clear, compelling visual experiences
  • Collaborate with editors, reporters, photographers, and developers to bring projects to life
  • Help create and commission photography, illustration, artwork, and other visual elements
  • Ensure visual consistency and uphold Globe brand standards across platforms
  • Work efficiently and collaboratively under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Contribute to evolving design standards, templates, and best practices for both print and digital platforms

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing for journalism or a newsroom environment
  • Experience designing for both print and digital platforms strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging feature layouts and visual storytelling packages
  • Strong typographic, visual, and information design skills
  • Technical proficiency with content management systems
  • Working knowledge of HTML
  • Familiarity with project management systems and collaborative workflows
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize effectively
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
