What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in editing positions, and why are they important?

To thrive in editing positions, you need a solid grasp of grammar, style, and language mechanics, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word tracking, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills set outstanding editors apart. These skills ensure accuracy, consistency, and clear messaging in published content, which are crucial for maintaining credibility and audience trust.

How do editing positions typically collaborate with writers and other team members during the content production process?

Editors regularly work alongside writers, designers, and sometimes subject matter experts to ensure content meets quality standards and aligns with organizational goals. This collaboration often involves providing constructive feedback, clarifying editorial guidelines, and occasionally participating in brainstorming sessions. Editors may also coordinate with project managers to meet deadlines and with fact-checkers or proofreaders to verify accuracy. Strong communication and a willingness to adapt to different team dynamics are essential for success in these roles.

Job description

At eBay, we're more than a global ecommerce leader - we're changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We're committed to pushing boundaries and leaving our mark as we reinvent the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.

Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers - and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.
About the team and role:
The eBay Brand Creative team is looking for a Copy Manager to lead and execute U.S. campaigns across our core enthusiast categories: eBay Live, Collectibles, Fashion, and Motors. In this role, you will develop editorial strategy and write copy across all channels, including onsite, email, social, video, and events.
You are both a leader and a maker-equally comfortable writing authentic, high-quality copy and editing the work of developing writers and third-party agencies. You will collaborate closely with marketing, brand, and strategy teams to ensure all messaging aligns with eBay's brand voice and resonates deeply with our most passionate shoppers!
What you will accomplish:
  • Write and create: Write excellent, on-brand copy for eBay's enthusiast audiences across Fashion, Collectibles, Motors and eBay Live
  • Champion the brand voice: Serve as a steward of the brand by upholding our brand voice and tone standards, whether you're writing or editing.
  • Lead and mentor by offering clear creative direction and editorial mentorship to agency partners and junior writers. Ensure content reflects eBay's brand voice and meets strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with internal teams-including marketing, brand, product, and design-to align campaign messaging with broader business and customer goals.
  • Tailor messaging: Maintain brand consistency in all copy, while reflecting cultural tonal nuance across fashion, motors, collectibles and eBay Live audiences.
  • Oversee execution: Review and approve agency deliverables, ensuring high-quality execution across onsite, social, email, and event communications.
  • Drive priority projects: Contribute to in-house creative development as needed, particularly for high-priority or top-of-funnel brand initiatives.
  • Pitch your ideas: Present and advocate for creative ideas and communication approaches with internal groups, supported by customer insights and performance data.

What you'll bring:
  • Experience: 5+ years of copywriting and editing experience, preferably in e-commerce, tech, or digital marketing.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism, or a related field.
  • A strong portfolio: A diverse body of work demonstrating your ability to write in various brand voices across digital assets (banners, social, video scripts, and presentations).
  • Editorial vision: Proven ability to develop and evolve editorial direction that supports both brand consistency and market relevance.
  • Sharp editing skills: Excellent writing and editing skills, coupled with skill in assessing tone, clarity, and efficiency in agency-produced content.
  • Project management skills: Strong organizational and coordination skills; comfortable handling several campaigns at once
  • Collaborative approach: Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams while advocating for creative integrity and strategic alignment.
