Software Engineer II -Work Location: Deerfield, FL

Team Summary: The Staples Digital Solutions team builds and supports the enterprise technology that connects Staples' internal systems with customers, vendors, suppliers, and third-party platforms. This team is focused on delivering reliable, scalable, and secure applications and integrations that enable seamless business operations, support high-volume data exchange, and improve the customer and partner experience. Working across software engineering, enterprise integrations, API solutions, EDI/cXML transaction processing, and production support, the team plays a critical role in advancing Staples' digital transformation and operational efficiency.
Role Summary: The Software Engineer II will design, develop, support, and maintain business-critical enterprise applications, integrations, and data exchange solutions. This role will leverage experience with jBase/PICK MultiValue databases, Java development, Linux/UNIX environments, APIs, EDI, cXML, JSON, HTTPS, SFTP, and related technologies to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable solutions. The engineer will troubleshoot production issues, develop enhancements, automate processes, and partner with business and technical stakeholders to improve system performance, operational efficiency, and customer outcomes.
What you'll be doing:
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise applications, integrations, and data exchange solutions using jBase, Java, and related technologies.
  • Support and enhance secure integration processes involving APIs, EDI, cXML, JSON, HTTPS, SFTP, and other data exchange technologies.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application, database, integration, and production support issues to ensure system stability, performance, and data integrity.
  • Develop automation scripts, system utilities, and technical solutions that improve operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Collaborate with business partners, customers, vendors, and technical teams to gather requirements, implement enhancements, and resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in solution design, code reviews, testing, and deployment activities while following established development, security, and quality standards.
  • Document technical solutions, analyze system data, and contribute to continuous improvement across software development and integration processes.
  • Lead or coordinate assigned workstreams for small to moderately complex projects while exercising independent judgment within established guidelines.

What's needed - Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of experience developing and supporting software applications in a professional environment.
  • 2+ years of experience working with jBase/PICK MultiValue databases.
  • 2+ years of programming experience using Java.
  • Experience supporting Linux/UNIX operating systems in production environments.
  • Experience creating and maintaining shell scripts such as Bash, Korn, or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience using AWK for file management, data manipulation, or automation.
  • Experience supporting secure data transmission technologies, including HTTPS and SFTP.
  • Working knowledge of OAuth authentication and API security concepts.
  • Experience processing, troubleshooting, or supporting at least one transaction format, such as EDI, cXML, or JSON.
  • Experience using Git or another enterprise version control system.
  • Experience participating in Agile, Scrum, or similar software development methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve production support issues.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, complex formulas, and data analysis techniques.

What's needed - Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience supporting ERP, procurement, supply chain, distribution, or commerce platforms.
  • Experience designing, developing, or maintaining REST APIs and web services.
  • Experience working with XML, REST, middleware, or enterprise integration technologies.
  • Experience troubleshooting high-volume production integration environments.
  • Experience supporting B2B integrations involving customers, suppliers, or trading partners.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker.
  • Experience using monitoring and logging solutions to support production systems.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation and Infrastructure-as-Code technologies.
  • Experience with jBase administrative utilities such as jstat, jrestore, jshow, or similar platform tools.
  • Knowledge of secure application development and API security best practices.
