What is edge fabrication?

Edge fabrication refers to the process of shaping, finishing, and treating the edges of materials—such as metal, glass, stone, or wood—to meet specific design, safety, or functional requirements. This can involve cutting, grinding, polishing, or applying protective coatings to edges. Edge fabrication is commonly used in industries like construction, manufacturing, and interior design to ensure that finished products have smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing edges. The techniques and tools used in edge fabrication vary depending on the material and the desired finish.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an edge fabrication technician?

To excel as an Edge Fabrication Technician, you need a background in manufacturing processes, blueprint reading, and material handling, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC machines, edge banding equipment, hand tools, and quality control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills that distinguish top performers. These competencies ensure precise fabrication, minimize errors, and maintain high productivity and safety standards in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced in edge fabrication roles, and how can new hires effectively overcome them?

Edge Fabrication professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision while working with various materials, adhering to tight project deadlines, and ensuring consistent product quality. New hires can overcome these by becoming familiar with the latest fabrication machinery, following detailed schematics carefully, and seeking feedback from experienced team members. Additionally, collaborating closely with quality assurance and engineering teams helps address issues early and refine processes for better efficiency and safety.

Job description

Quality Inspector (Fabrication & Welding)
Join a Team That Takes Pride in Quality Craftsmanship
Cutting Edge Fabrication is a leading metal fabrication company producing medium to large, complex weldments and fabricated assemblies for customers in transportation, defense, aerospace, construction equipment, and other demanding industries.
For more than 30 years, we've built a reputation for quality, reliability, and tackling challenging projects. As we continue investing in our people, equipment, and capabilities, we're looking for skilled team members who want to help build the next chapter of our company's growth.
Our priorities are simple: safety, quality, and on-time delivery. We believe those priorities help us take care of both our employees and our customers. If you're someone who takes pride in quality workmanship, enjoys solving technical challenges, and wants to help build a best-in-class fabrication operation, we'd like to talk with you.
Position Summary
Cutting Edge Fabrication is seeking a full-time Quality Inspector to support our fabrication, welding, machining, and final inspection processes.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring our products meet customer specifications and industry standards. You will work closely with our fabrication, welding, machining, and engineering teams to verify quality throughout the manufacturing process-not just at final inspection.
We're looking for someone with quality inspection experience or an experienced welder, fitter, machinist, or fabricator who has a strong understanding of print reading and quality requirements and is interested in building a career in quality.
Responsibilities
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, job routings, and customer requirements
  • Perform inspections throughout the manufacturing process, including:
    • Post fit-up
    • Post weld
    • Post machining
    • Final inspection
  • Inspect fabricated components and weldments to drawing and customer specifications
  • Perform weld inspections in accordance with AWS and ASME requirements
  • Verify dimensional accuracy using standard inspection equipment
  • Document inspection results and maintain quality records
  • Identify nonconforming product and communicate quality concerns to production and management
  • Assist with root cause investigations and corrective actions
  • Help maintain and continuously improve our quality management system
  • Perform other quality-related duties as assigned

Requirements
Qualifications
Required
  • Experience in quality inspection or metal fabrication, welding, machining, or manufacturing
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of GD&T
  • Strong understanding of fabrication and welding processes
  • Excellent math skills, including geometry and basic trigonometry
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Preferred
  • Experience inspecting weldments to AWS D1.1 and/or ASME Section IX requirements
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other inspection tools
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience
  • Experience in a custom fabrication or job-shop environment
What We're Looking For
  • Someone who takes pride in quality and craftsmanship
  • A detail-oriented individual who enjoys solving technical problems
  • A dependable teammate who communicates effectively with production personnel
  • Someone who believes quality is built into the process-not inspected in at the end
  • A professional who values safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Retirement benefits
  • Opportunities for training, certification, and career growth
  • Stable workload with a company committed to long-term success
