How much do transformers jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 1, 2026, the average yearly pay for transformers in the United States is $65,106.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $55,000.00 and $55,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Transformer Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transformer Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, knowledge of transformer design, and relevant academic qualifications such as a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like ANSYS or MATLAB, and industry standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC) is typically required, along with certifications in electrical safety or power systems. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, reliable transformer operation and supporting the critical infrastructure of power distribution.

How do electrical engineers specializing in transformers typically collaborate with other teams during a transformer design project?

Electrical engineers working on transformer projects often collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, project managers, procurement specialists, and sometimes even clients. They coordinate with mechanical engineers to ensure the transformer's structure supports its electrical requirements and meets safety standards. Regular meetings and design reviews help align specifications, address potential issues early, and maintain project timelines. Effective teamwork and clear communication are essential, as transformer projects usually involve multiple disciplines and stakeholders.

What are Transformers in the context of machine learning and artificial intelligence?

Transformers are a type of deep learning model architecture that have revolutionized natural language processing and other AI tasks. Introduced in a 2017 paper by Vaswani et al., transformers work by using a mechanism called 'attention' to weigh the importance of different parts of input data, such as words in a sentence. This allows them to handle long-range dependencies and process sequences in parallel, making them highly efficient and effective for tasks like language translation, text summarization, and even image processing. Popular models like BERT, GPT, and T5 are all based on transformer architecture.

What is the difference between Transformers vs Substation Technicians?

AspectTransformersSubstation Technicians

Industry UsagePower generation, transmission, distributionPower transmission, distribution, maintenance
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Transformers and Substation Technicians both work in the electrical power industry, focusing on different aspects of electrical infrastructure. Transformers specialists primarily handle the installation, maintenance, and repair of transformers, which are crucial for voltage regulation. Substation Technicians work on entire substations, including transformers, switches, and protective devices. While their roles overlap in electrical maintenance, transformers experts specialize specifically in transformers, whereas substation technicians have a broader scope within electrical substations.

Job description

Position Summary:
Forgent Power Solutions is a leading manufacturer of dry-type and liquid-filled transformers serving commercial, industrial, and utility markets. We are seeking a Director of Project Management to own the full order lifecycle - from order acknowledgment through final delivery - for a high-volume, custom manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for managing a team of 4-6 Project Managers and building the systems and processes that ensure on-time, accurate execution across every order.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership
  • Lead, develop, and hold accountable a team of 4-6 Project Managers across the full order execution cycle
  • Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular 1:1s, and build a culture of ownership and urgency
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex, high-stakes, or at-risk orders

Order Execution
  • Own the end-to-end process from order acknowledgment through customer delivery
  • Ensure submittal drawings are issued accurately and on schedule
  • Manage the drawing revision process - tracking customer redlines, ensuring internal review, and confirming correct resubmission
  • Drive proactive, professional customer communication at every stage: acknowledgment, submittals, revision cycles, production milestones, and shipping

Manufacturing Coordination
  • Partner closely with production planning and shop floor leadership to align order schedules with manufacturing capacity
  • Identify and resolve scheduling conflicts before they impact commit dates
  • Maintain real-time visibility into order status and proactively surface risks to commercial and operations leadership

Systems & Process
  • Build and enforce standardized PM workflows, SOPs, and tools that scale with order volume
  • Identify gaps in current processes and lead improvement initiatives with measurable outcomes
  • Ensure data integrity across ERP and project tracking systems

Qualifications:
Required
  • 8+ years of experience in project management within industrial or manufacturing environments
  • 3+ years managing a team of project managers or equivalent roles
  • Demonstrated ability to build or significantly improve PM processes and systems in a production environment
  • Strong communication skills - comfortable owning customer relationships at a professional level
  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, production, and sales teams
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and project tracking tools

Preferred
  • Experience in transformer, switchgear, electrical equipment, or related engineered-to-order manufacturing
  • Familiarity with submittal drawing workflows and engineering documentation processes
  • Experience in a made-to-order or configure-to-order manufacturing environment

Work Environment:
Periodic travel to manufacturing and operations facilities in California and Tijuana, Mexico
