Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the School of Government offers up to 300 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 14,000 public officials each year. In addition, faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, manuals, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government. The School is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration.
Position Summary
The Legal Research Associate will be responsible for conducting legal research, analysis, and writing to support the short- and long-term work of School of Government faculty in the areas of local government law, local government finance law, local government utilities finance law, school finance law, and related topics. Responsibilities will include researching statutes, case law, administrative regulations, attorney general opinions, and other legal authorities; analyzing legal issues; cite-checking publications and other written materials; reviewing and editing draft publications for legal accuracy and clarity; and assisting with the preparation of articles, blog posts, presentations, training materials, and other educational resources. The Associate may also assist with legislative tracking, statutory analysis, and other special research projects as needed. The Associate will be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing deadlines, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to changing priorities in response to the needs of faculty and North Carolina local government officials.
This is a part-time position requiring approximately 20 hours of work per week. The specific work schedule is flexible and may be arranged in consultation with the supervising faculty member, provided the Associate is available to work approximately 20 hours each week. The Associate will be expected to work on campus one day each week, with the option to work remotely the other days.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
