Job Summary
External Affairs professional who possesses extensive knowledge of community and business development, local government processes, nonprofit organizations, and communications. Demonstrate proficiency in the application of data and situational information to analyze and solve complex problems with very limited guidance from higher level personnel. Develop working knowledge of local ordinances, standards, codes, concepts, systems, and business processes relevant to work assignments. Guides internal and external work groups to address community level issues or perform analysis to accomplish work plans initiated by APCo. and AEP leadership and local appointed leaders and elected officials. Provides high value input for corporate and business unit strategy development and coordination, and support for outreach and education. Possesses an extensive knowledge of developments, procedures and current events affecting company and local activity, and provides facilitation of the implementation in the needed areas of change. Assists with meeting APCo. External Affairs goals related to emergency response, community support, local business growth, volunteerism and other issues identified.

What you'll do:
Essential Job Functions & Tasks
  • Participate and/or lead Company programs and department initiatives with internal and external organizations, including but not limited to, Political Action Committee (PAC), teacher grant programs, educational workshops, charitable events and economic development initiatives.
  • General Assembly Tracking - legislation tracking and reporting during the General Assembly sessions. Identify key legislation, input into tracking software, shop legislation with subject matter experts and assist in developing key talking points for the team to use while lobbying the policies.
  • PAC Assistance - Assist with management of all 3 PACs in VA/WV/TN. Create and manage member communications working with the Federal Affairs team related to member solicitations, PAC events, information tracking, committee meetings, and others as assigned.
  • Respond to legislative complaints in a manner consistent with External/State Govt. Affairs managers, as requested.
  • Participate in community meetings of interest to the Company, as assigned by Community Affairs and Economic Development managers.
  • Manage all aspects of OPCO's Business Center operations critical in promoting community and economic development.
  • Foundation Management - Assist with tracking requests as they come through the external affairs team. Manage the process and team meetings to determine requests to move forward. Handle communication with grantees to acquire proper paperwork. Track the requests throughout the process, working with the communications team for planned press engagement.
  • Assist External Affairs team with several items such as community engagement, volunteer opportunities, franchise renewals, storm response and other matters as assigned.
  • Analyze and interpret information and statistical reports relating to community services and economic development.
  • Keep abreast and coach others on Company policies/procedures, community services and economic development systems and other changes affecting the Company's responsiveness to customers.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with other departments as necessary in order to perform job functions.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and exercises good judgment.
  • Budget Tracking - work closely with accounting team to monitor budget spending and ensure we remain on track.
  • Backup Payment Processer - process all payments for contributions, Foundation, PAC, and other accounts payable

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, corporate communications or related areas of study.

Work Experience:
  • 7 years' related experience including knowledge of the Company's community and economic development services systems, policies and procedures.
