Job description
Eco Reps are student leaders who support the Office of Sustainability's mission by promoting sustainable practices, engaging in the campus community, and contributing to sustainability programs and initiatives. This position provides hands-on experience in project management, communication, leadership, and problem-solving while supporting students to build valuable professional skills and advance sustainability efforts at SNHU.
The Student Surplus Services Eco Rep supports the Office of Sustainability's efforts to reduce waste and promote circular economy practices through the management, redistribution, and promotion of surplus materials and resources. This position provides hands-on experience in inventory management, sustainability operations, project coordination, customer service, and campus engagement. The Student Surplus Services Eco Rep helps divert usable items from disposal by facilitating reuse opportunities that benefit students, departments, and the broader SNHU community.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with collecting, sorting, organizing, and tracking surplus items from campus departments and events.
- Maintain accurate inventory records of donated, transferred, and redistributed materials.
- Support inventory audits and storage organization efforts.
- Monitor inventory levels and identify opportunities for improved efficiency and utilization.
Material Reuse & Circular Economy Programs
- Support campus surplus and reuse initiatives that extend the life of materials and reduce waste.
- Assist with coordinating surplus item exchanges, donations, and redistribution programs.
- Help identify items suitable for reuse, donation, recycling, or responsible disposal.
- Promote circular economy principles through operational and educational activities.
Customer Service & Stakeholder Engagement
- Interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners utilizing surplus services.
- Assist community members in locating and acquiring available surplus items.
- Build relationships with departments to increase participation in reuse and surplus programs.
- Serve as a sustainability ambassador by educating community members about waste reduction opportunities.
Data Collection & Reporting
- Track surplus program metrics, including items collected, redistributed, donated, and diverted from landfill.
- Assist with data entry, recordkeeping, and impact reporting.
- Support assessment efforts to measure program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Create reports, summaries, and visualizations that communicate program outcomes.
Outreach & Education
- Promote surplus services through tabling events, social media, newsletters, and educational campaigns.
- Educate the campus community on waste reduction, reuse, and responsible consumption practices.
- Support sustainability events that highlight circular economy initiatives and resource conservation.
Project & Program Support
- Assist with planning and implementing special surplus collection events, move-out programs, donation drives, and reuse initiatives including Good Stuff and govdeals.com
- Support collaboration between the Office of Sustainability and campus departments.
- Contribute ideas for improving the effectiveness and visibility of surplus programs.
