What does an eBPF engineer do?

An eBPF job typically involves working with extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) technology to enhance Linux kernel functionality without modifying its source code. Responsibilities may include developing eBPF programs for performance monitoring, security enforcement, and networking optimizations. Engineers in this role often work with low-level system internals, C programming, and tools like BPF Compiler Collection (BCC) or eBPF Toolkit. They may collaborate with teams to improve observability, troubleshoot system behavior, and optimize application performance.

What skills and qualifications are needed for an eBPF engineer?

To thrive as an eBPF Engineer, you need deep expertise in Linux internals, networking, C programming, and familiarity with low-level systems debugging. Experience with eBPF tooling (such as bpftrace, bpftool, or LLVM), familiarity with kernel development environments, and optionally certifications in Linux or networking are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication with cross-functional teams are important soft skills for this position. These skills and qualities are critical for developing safe, performant, and maintainable eBPF programs that enhance system observability and security in complex environments.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a founding engineer to join our team. You will be working with a small team of highly skilled engineers to build out our open-source project, Odigos. We are primarily working with C and Go for building runtime instrumentations (via eBPF Programs) and are looking for someone knowledgeable with these technologies. We are looking for someone who loves open-source and is excited about making it easier for developers to debug their applications by generating distributed tracing.

ABOUT US

Odigos leverages eBPF technology to create an open-source solution that can automatically generate distributed traces for any application without any engineering work. Developers are struggling with extracting and delivering high-quality monitoring data. Currently, building a pipeline is a manual process that takes months to implement, is an error-prone process that requires tons of code changes across multiple R&D teams, and demands collaboration.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

You’ll develop eBPF programs (instrumentations) for multiple programming languages. See an example of our open-source instrumentation: https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-go-instrumentation - Design and develop our Enterprise offering from the ground up. - Engage with the community, and help build a community around our open-source project.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

· 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or in a similar role.

· Proficiency in C programming, with a solid understanding of Assembly and Linux.

• Experience with Kernel development.

• Familiarity with AWS and cloud computing platforms.

• Experience working with OpenTelemetry.

• Prior exposure to eBPF technology and its applications.

Join us at Odigos and play a pivotal role in redefining application monitoring and debugging through innovative, eBPF-driven solutions.
