What is a Durability Engineer?

A Durability Engineer is a professional who evaluates and ensures the longevity and reliability of products, components, or systems under various conditions. Their main role is to design, test, and analyze materials and structures to predict their performance over time, identifying potential failure points and recommending improvements. Durability Engineers often work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, where product lifespan is critical. They use simulation tools, laboratory tests, and real-world data to optimize products for durability and cost-effectiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Durability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Durability Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and failure analysis, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, and data acquisition systems, as well as knowledge of industry testing standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting findings. These skills and qualifications ensure that products meet long-term reliability standards, reducing warranty costs and enhancing customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Durability Engineer vs Materials Engineer?

AspectDurability EngineerMaterials Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Civil, or Materials Engineering; certifications like PE or ASQBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science or Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, R&D centers, manufacturing facilitiesResearch labs, manufacturing plants, product development teams
Industry UsageFocus on product longevity, failure analysis, durability testingFocus on material selection, properties, and development

Durability Engineers primarily focus on testing and ensuring product longevity and performance over time, often working closely with testing labs and manufacturing. Materials Engineers concentrate on developing and selecting materials to meet product requirements. While both roles require a strong background in engineering and materials, their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

What are some common challenges faced by Durability Engineers, and how are they typically addressed?

Durability Engineers often encounter challenges related to simulating real-world conditions accurately and managing tight project timelines. Balancing the need for thorough testing with time and budget constraints requires careful planning and prioritization. Collaboration with design, materials, and testing teams is essential to identify potential failure modes early and implement solutions before production. Proactive communication and continual learning about new materials and testing methodologies help Durability Engineers stay ahead of potential issues.

You will collaborate with the other parts of the durability group along with chassis, dynamics, and program teams to confirm test setups are correct and to report any opportunities. This role will interface for the MBD team in ensuring correlation. Your experience in program management, fatigue, block cycle testing, data analysis, and 329 rig testing will ensure success. This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to Rivian’s mission by ensuring structurally durable vehicles for our customers. With your experience and proactive mindset, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring an outstanding future for sustainable mobility.

Responsibilities
  • Execute durability testing and data collection.
  • Set up and operate 329 vehicle rig testing.
  • Prepare test reports and presentations.
  • Manage multiple testing and data collection projects.
  • Support CAE correlation.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, materials engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of road simulation 329 rig vehicle testing and drive file development.
  • Experience with MTS RPC Pro or MTS Connect software.
  • 1+ years of durability data collection experience.
  • Understanding of accelerated fatigue testing.
  • Experience with nCode or similar analysis programs (e.g., FEMFAT, HyperWorks) to perform loads and fatigue life calculations for body, chassis, and suspension components is highly preferred.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or other programming languages is a plus.
  • Proven track record of problem-solving and independent root cause analysis.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and manage competing priorities.
  • Passion for Rivian’s mission and a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Ability to travel locally to testing suppliers and the proving grounds.
  • Minimum age of 21
  • No driving related suspensions or revocation of Driver License (within a 3-5 year period)
  • No drug or alcohol related driving incidents in the last 3 years
  • No more than 1 serious moving violation in the last 3 years
  • Must have a valid driver's license in the state of residence that you will be driving/operating a vehicle
