Durability Engineer information

What is a durability engineer?

A Durability Engineer is a professional who evaluates and ensures the longevity and reliability of products, components, or systems under various conditions. Their main role is to design, test, and analyze materials and structures to predict their performance over time, identifying potential failure points and recommending improvements. Durability Engineers often work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, where product lifespan is critical. They use simulation tools, laboratory tests, and real-world data to optimize products for durability and cost-effectiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a durability engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Durability Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and failure analysis, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, and data acquisition systems, as well as knowledge of industry testing standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting findings. These skills and qualifications ensure that products meet long-term reliability standards, reducing warranty costs and enhancing customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Durability Engineer vs Materials Engineer?

AspectDurability EngineerMaterials Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Civil, or Materials Engineering; certifications like PE or ASQBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science or Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, R&D centers, manufacturing facilitiesResearch labs, manufacturing plants, product development teams
Industry UsageFocus on product longevity, failure analysis, durability testingFocus on material selection, properties, and development

Durability Engineers primarily focus on testing and ensuring product longevity and performance over time, often working closely with testing labs and manufacturing. Materials Engineers concentrate on developing and selecting materials to meet product requirements. While both roles require a strong background in engineering and materials, their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

What are some common challenges faced by durability engineers, and how are they typically addressed?

Durability Engineers often encounter challenges related to simulating real-world conditions accurately and managing tight project timelines. Balancing the need for thorough testing with time and budget constraints requires careful planning and prioritization. Collaboration with design, materials, and testing teams is essential to identify potential failure modes early and implement solutions before production. Proactive communication and continual learning about new materials and testing methodologies help Durability Engineers stay ahead of potential issues.

Position Overview
With its brands Scania, MAN, International and Volkswagen Truck & Bus, TRATON is one of the world's leading commercial vehicle manufacturers. Its range comprises trucks, buses, and light-duty commercial vehicles. At TRATON, we are convinced that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. Together with our brands we have the power to bring about decisive change. With the right resources, tools and guidelines, we support our brands in making the future of transportation more sustainable.
In April 2023, TRATON embarked on an ambitious journey to integrate independent brand Research & Development (R&D) Organizations in Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus into a single global TRATON R&D organization.
By integrating the capabilities and resources of our brands, we will accelerate the introduction of new technologies and solutions to deliver the most competitive products and solutions to our customers.
TRATON USA R&D Team has a great opportunity for a Senior Project Engineer - Multibody Simulation - TRATON USA R&D.
The Multibody Simulation (MBS) team is accountable for performing full vehicle simulations for structural durability and loads prediction, comfort, and suspension motion across all our commercial vehicles. The team provides key design recommendations for isolator rates and placement, frame and component stiffness, cab suspension design, and primary suspension design, among other tasks.
The Senior Project Engineer will have responsibility to build, debug, run, and post process full vehicle MBS models using ADAMS/Car or Simpack software, to accomplish the tasks mentioned above. In addition, the Senior Project Engineer is expected to guide and mentor less experienced team members and help develop methods and processes with some supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Use expertise in Adams/Car or SIMPACK software to develop and simulate multibody models in support of product development of trucks, tractor-trailer combinations, and buses with conventional and electric powertrains (EVs)
  • Generate and maintain subsystem models of current and new vehicle suspension, frame, and body systems, including creation of flex body representations of parts when appropriate.
  • Act as acknowledged expert within the organization in the discipline of vehicle dynamics and structural durability / loads prediction.
  • Solve significant, unique, and complex problems in the areas of vehicle dynamics and durability loads prediction. Develop new solutions or methods for complex projects, with some supervision.
  • Interact with the chassis and body design teams, vehicle dynamics and durability test teams, and structural durability analysis teams to ensure synchronized product development and validation.
  • Work with minimal supervision to drive given projects to conclusion.
  • Work on developing methods to improve process flow and prediction capabilities as well as test correlation.
  • Create and maintain reporting throughout team levels.
