Durability Engineer information

What is a durability engineer?

A Durability Engineer is a professional who evaluates and ensures the longevity and reliability of products, components, or systems under various conditions. Their main role is to design, test, and analyze materials and structures to predict their performance over time, identifying potential failure points and recommending improvements. Durability Engineers often work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, where product lifespan is critical. They use simulation tools, laboratory tests, and real-world data to optimize products for durability and cost-effectiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a durability engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Durability Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and failure analysis, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, and data acquisition systems, as well as knowledge of industry testing standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting findings. These skills and qualifications ensure that products meet long-term reliability standards, reducing warranty costs and enhancing customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by durability engineers, and how are they typically addressed?

Durability Engineers often encounter challenges related to simulating real-world conditions accurately and managing tight project timelines. Balancing the need for thorough testing with time and budget constraints requires careful planning and prioritization. Collaboration with design, materials, and testing teams is essential to identify potential failure modes early and implement solutions before production. Proactive communication and continual learning about new materials and testing methodologies help Durability Engineers stay ahead of potential issues.

What is the difference between Durability Engineer vs Materials Engineer?

AspectDurability EngineerMaterials Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Civil, or Materials Engineering; certifications like PE or ASQBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science or Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, R&D centers, manufacturing facilitiesResearch labs, manufacturing plants, product development teams
Industry UsageFocus on product longevity, failure analysis, durability testingFocus on material selection, properties, and development

Durability Engineers primarily focus on testing and ensuring product longevity and performance over time, often working closely with testing labs and manufacturing. Materials Engineers concentrate on developing and selecting materials to meet product requirements. While both roles require a strong background in engineering and materials, their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

Preferred locations include states along the Eastern Seaboard, such as Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, or other nearby East Coast markets.

Business Development
  • Identify and develop tape opportunities across the building and construction value chain, including construction OEM applications for roofing, windows, doors, façade systems, building materials manufacturers, and distribution channels.
  • Manage a disciplined sales pipeline from early concept and specification through validation, commercial award, and product launch.
  • Support product development initiatives where tape solutions are engineered into a customer's finished building product.
  • Represent ATP at industry trade shows, conferences, and association events to increase market presence and generate new business opportunities.
Solution Engineering
  • Translate customer application, process, and performance requirements into effective technical solutions across ATP's tape portfolio.
  • Guide customers through adhesion testing, surface compatibility assessments, environmental durability evaluations, application methods, and cost-performance tradeoff decisions.
  • Partner with Research & Development and Applications Engineering teams on customer-specific projects, particularly within OEM manufacturing environments and product integration applications.
  • Stay current on construction industry trends, building code developments, material science innovations, and competitive market activity.
  • Support the conversion of incumbent tape products and traditional fastening methods by demonstrating application advantages, performance benefits, and conversion economics.
Account Management
  • Serve as the primary tape specialist supporting Henkel's construction sales team across key customer accounts.
  • Assist in developing account growth plans by identifying tape opportunities within existing customer relationships.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to engineering, product development, operations, purchasing, category management, and other customer stakeholders when deeper application expertise is needed.
Joint Go-to-Market Coordination
  • Serve as the primary liaison for ATP's joint initiatives with Henkel's Construction Division.
  • Identify opportunities where existing liquid adhesive relationships can be expanded into tape specifications, system conversions, or integrated bonding solutions.
  • Support partner sales representatives with technical expertise, application guidance, product positioning, and customer-facing support.
  • Coordinate cross-functional activities related to joint opportunities, including sample requests, testing plans, production trials, packaging requirements, labeling needs, and commercial milestones.
  • Travel domestically as required, with occasional international travel possible.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical sales within specialty adhesives, tapes, building products, or engineered materials.
  • Construction industry experience required; experience supporting OEM applications in roofing, windows, doors, façades, building envelope systems, or related markets strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with building materials distribution channels is a plus.
  • Experience supporting or managing product development, validation testing, and production line trials with OEM or engineered product manufacturers preferred.
  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to understand and communicate adhesive performance characteristics, application engineering considerations, and customer testing requirements.
  • Proven success managing complex sales opportunities, influencing multiple stakeholders, and converting technical opportunities into business growth.
  • Experience working effectively in collaborative and matrixed organizations, including joint selling with external partner teams.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or a similar customer relationship management (CRM) platform.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Exceptional communication, organization, project management, and time management skills.
  • Ability to travel 25%-50% domestically as required, with occasional international travel.
