What is a DSP?

DSP stands for Direct Support Professional. DSPs are caregivers who assist individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities in daily living activities, helping them achieve greater independence and quality of life. Their responsibilities can include personal care, meal preparation, transportation, medication management, and supporting social or community engagement. DSPs often work in group homes, private residences, or community settings, and their work is essential in promoting inclusion and empowerment for people with disabilities.

What does a DSP do?

A typical day for a Direct Support Professional (DSP) involves assisting individuals with disabilities in their daily activities, which may include personal care, medication management, and helping clients participate in community events. DSPs often work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating closely with nurses, case managers, and therapists to ensure each individual's care plan is followed. Regular communication with families and reporting on progress or concerns are also important aspects of the role. This collaborative environment helps ensure that clients receive consistent, high-quality support tailored to their needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DSP?

To thrive as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you need a basic understanding of personal care, behavioral support, and documentation, often supported by a high school diploma and relevant training. Familiarity with care documentation systems, first aid/CPR certification, and sometimes medication administration systems is typically required. Compassion, patience, strong communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding DSPs apart. These abilities ensure the safety, well-being, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities while supporting effective teamwork and compliance with care standards.

AspectDspNetwork Technician
Required CertificationsFCC License, Technical CertificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA
Work EnvironmentTelecom sites, installation, maintenanceOffice, data centers, network setup
Industry UsageTelecommunications, broadcastingIT, networking, telecommunications

Both Dsp and Network Technicians work in telecommunications and require technical certifications. Dsp roles focus on signal processing and telecommunications equipment, often in field environments, while Network Technicians handle network infrastructure, troubleshooting, and setup in office or data center settings. They share overlapping skills but serve different specialized functions within the industry.

Are Dsp jobs hard to get?

Getting a DSP (Direct Support Professional) job can be competitive, but opportunities are available for those with relevant skills, patience, and certifications such as CPR or first aid. Success often depends on local demand, experience, and the ability to work flexible hours. Building a strong resume and demonstrating compassion can improve chances of employment.

Where do DSPs get paid the most?

DSPs (Delivery Service Providers) tend to earn higher wages in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for delivery services, such as urban areas or affluent neighborhoods. Compensation can also vary based on experience, delivery volume, and the company they work for, with some companies offering bonuses or incentives for efficiency and performance.

Job description

AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today's five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.
Position Overview
The Dynamic Scheduler DSP Algorithm Engineer designs and optimizes a resource-allocation algorithm for the satellite payload system, working at the intersection of combinatorial optimization, signal processing, and system-level performance trade-offs. This person designs, analyzes, and improves optimization algorithms for large-scale resource-allocation problems, balancing competing system objectives - efficiency, coverage, and performance - and validating solutions against simulation and real system metrics rather than theoretical guarantees alone. The role requires strong communication skills and comfort working across algorithm, system, and hardware constraints to ensure solutions scale efficiently to large problem sizes.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, analyze, and improve optimization algorithms for large-scale resource-allocation problems.
  • Balance competing system objectives (efficiency, coverage, performance) and formalize the trade-offs involved.
  • Validate algorithms against simulation and real system metrics, not just theoretical guarantees.
  • Ensure solutions scale efficiently to large problem sizes.

Qualifications
Education:
Experience:
  • Strong background in optimization (combinatorial and/or convex), with hands-on problem-solving experience.
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for algorithm prototyping.
  • Ability to translate mathematical/technical specifications into working code.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Background in wireless communications, satellite systems, or signal processing.
  • Graduate degree (MS/PhD) in EE, applied math, operations research, or CS with an optimization focus.

Soft Skills:
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across algorithm, system, and hardware constraints.

Technology Stack:
  • Python and/or MATLAB for algorithm prototyping.
  • Combinatorial and convex optimization frameworks and solvers.
  • Simulation and system-metric validation tooling for large-scale resource-allocation problems.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in an office environment, with occasional exposure to lab or test environments to validate algorithms against real system metrics.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to support system validation or cross-team collaboration as needed.

This job description may not be inclusive to the duties and responsibilities listed. Additional tasks may be assigned to the employee from time to time or the scope of the job may change as needed by business demands.
