We're searching for the next generation of innovative minds who want to shape the world and live to build. CMAC is looking for Carpenter Apprentices in our Sterling, Virginia region.
What You Will Do:
As a Carpenter Apprentice, your primary daily responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
  • Learns how to prepare the layout of the project.
  • Estimates height, width, length and other proportions.
  • Selects appropriate work materials.
  • Learns how to work from blueprints, drawings or instructions from supervisors.
  • Works within precise limits and standards of accuracy (Quality Control).
  • Learns how to work with varied materials including but not limited to wood, plastic, fiberglass or drywall.
  • Utilizes tools including, but not limited, to chisels, planes, saws, drills, sanders to erect and repair structures, levels, rulers, plumb bobs, framing squares, surveying equipment to ensure everything is level and secure, and other carpentry tools.
  • Checks work along the way to ensure it meets all code and specification requirements.
  • Works on top of stilts, ladders, and the top beams of buildings.
  • Learns how to perform the building of handrails, steps, drilling, patching, and light concrete work.
  • Learns how to build stairs, temporary doors, ramps, temporary walls, etc.
  • Erects various types of scaffolding including pipe and safety barriers, and make provisions on scaffolding for moving and handling materials needed for the job.
  • Learns how to create structures for pouring concrete.
  • Learns how to install partitions, doors, and windows.
  • Learns how to install or replace panes of glass, ceiling tiles, and doors.
  • Learns how to install base, cabinets, and crown moldings.
  • Keeps immediate working area clean. Must use broom and wheelbarrows and follow material procedures.
  • Properly plans and executes specific work as directed.

Expected Hours of Work: Full time, more than 40-hours a week. May work nights and weekends, construction may sometimes continue around the clock to meet deadlines.
Travel: Must have reliable transportation. Must be willing to travel 60 miles a day dependent on project location relative to where the employee lives.
Pay: $19.93-$29.89 per hour.

  • There are no minimum educational requirements.

Preferred experience, knowledge, and skills for this role include:
  • Have general knowledge of basic concrete and hand tools.
  • Five (5) years of construction related experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Must have own hand tools and be proficient in operating a variety of tools.
  • Must understand safety rules and tool/equipment instructions.
  • Have the ability to take measurements and make calculations.
  • Ability to work well with supervision and peers.
  • Have good communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Must pass any skills tests as required by the jobsite.
  • Ability to problem solve when errors occur.
  • Keep tools and workspace organized.
  • Must be conscious of time schedules and deadlines.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
