COFFEE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM
Job Description
Bus Attendant (Special Education)
Responsible to: Director of Transportation and Special Education Director
Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Valid driver's license
  3. Must pass a pre-employment physical examination with controlled substance testing and random tests for controlled substances and alcohol.
  4. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  5. Sufficient strength, agility and dexterity, visual acuity, and ocular-motor reaction time to support in resolving emergency situations.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Safely supports students on an assigned route according to a definite schedule. Performs all activities required to safely support a school bus transporting Coffee County School students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and school related events
  2. Supports transportation for field trips, other sanctioned outings, athletic contests, and extra-curricular events as assigned
  3. Monitors riders for potentially dangerous riding situations; watches for and confiscates sharp objects. Reports discipline riders who break posted rules.
  4. Monitors orderly entering/exiting the bus. Take appropriate safety precautions as students are boarding and departing.
  5. Handles emergency situations by stabilizing situations until assistance can be obtained. May implement emergency evacuations to include assisting students to evacuate the bus and provide safe transport.
  6. Provides assistance to children transferring from one bus to another.
  7. Secures riders in seat and seat belts; assists children in wheelchairs as needed
  8. Supports and monitors seat chart of assigned riders.
  9. Escorts children across the street and/or to the door of their home as needed
  10. Provides assistance to the driver as needed; monitors the backing up procedure
  11. Adheres to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the department and various regulatory agencies
  12. Displays ability to interact positively with, gain respect of, and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled and not distractive to safe driving
  13. Displays knowledge of child behavior and safety practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities
  14. Demonstrates positive customer service skills
  15. Maintains a positive, safe, and peaceful environment on the school bus

General Requirements:
  1. Follows Federal and State Laws and adopted policies and procedures in accordance with School Board priorities
  2. Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest standards of public education and in support of the District's Vision/Mission Statements
  3. Maintains ethical standards, which include professionalism and the protection of confidential student and staff information
  4. Other responsibilities and/or duties may be required and assigned
