CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Truck Driving Instructorย 

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part-time ย  ย 
REPORTS TO: Training Manager Truck Driving Academy
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt ย  ย 
DIVISION: Enrollment and Workforce Innovationย  ย 
CAMPUS: College-wide

DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS

Instruct students to operate various types of commercial equipment to obtain commercial driverโ€™s licenses.

ย ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform essential duties to expected performance standards. ย  Reasonable accommodations are made as required for persons who are disabled under the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Instructs students using a variety of methods including lectures, demonstrations, and visual tools to assist students in attaining commercial driving skills. ย Trains students in areas including operating a commercial motor vehicle, proper method of up and down shifting, speed management, visual scan, vehicle control and instruments, left and rights turns, maintaining required driving logs, vehicle inspection, and safety techniques.
Teaches students commercial driving rules and DOT regulations. Evaluates students performance in meeting course objectives. ย Prepares and administers course examinations.ย 
Maintains accurate records documenting studentsโ€™ progress and training hours. ย 
Prepares and presents lesson plans including course and student performance objectives.ย 
Assists in academy student job placement.
Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works as required to meet workload demands. Travel to Ohio locations and some limited overnight travel is required.

Performs other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in a classroom or outdoor environment. ย The work environment involves risks or discomforts requiring normal precautions typical of classroom and outdoor environments and driving conditions. ย The employee is exposed to weather conditions when driving or riding with students and during outdoor classes including wind, rain, sleet, snow and ice. The work requires the use of safe work practices when operating a commercial motor vehicle, and observance of safety and traffic regulations. ย Exposure to typical traffic conditions and hazards when driving or riding with students. ย 

USUAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The following physical demands are typically used to perform this jobโ€™s essential duties and responsibilities. ย They are not qualification standards, rather they may be used to help the College, employee, or applicant identify where and how reasonable accommodations may be made when an otherwise qualified person is unable to perform the jobโ€™s essential duties due to an ADA disability.
While performing duties of this job, the employee frequently stands and walks for extended periods of time when teaching and frequently sits at the controls of commercial motor vehicles for extended periods of time, uses hands to hold and control equipment; reaches with hands and arms. ย The employee must normally exercise good eye/hand/foot coordination when operating CMV. ย Vision demands include distance vision when driving CMV. ย The employee frequently talks and hears when instructing and working with students. ย The employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: instructional methods and techniques; commercial driving techniques; commercial driving rules, regulations and safety practices and procedures; general commercial motor vehicle maintenance.ย 

Ability to: effectively communicate information and explain techniques to students; evaluate students success in achieving objectives; supervise students; apply ethical standards to work situations; ย make work decisions in accordance with ย SSCCโ€™s values; show respect and sensitivity for cultural differences, and promote an harassment-free environment; embrace and support constructive change; work efficiently and effectively to improve College operations; consistently follow safety and security procedures and practices; develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, associates, learning community, and general public; contribute toward building a positive team working environment; treat others with respect as representative of SSCC.
Skill in: driving a commercial motor vehicle; maintaining a positive and effective learning environment; operation of audio visual and other classroom equipment; performing commercial motor vehicle general maintenance; operation of computer; application of job related software; safe and effective operation of routine office equipment and maintenance equipment; verbal and written communications.

QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. ย An example of an acceptable qualification is: High School degree or GED plus CDL driver training for training managers with three to five years related experience in operating a commercial motor vehicle and previous training experience.
Applicant must successfully pass required background checks, driving records check and drug test in accordance with Southern State Community Collegeโ€™s policies and procedures and applicable laws. ย ย 
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Commercial Driverโ€™s License; CDL Driver Training School / Training Manager.
