What is the difference between Drive Test Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectDrive Test EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in telecommunications, electronics, or related field; certifications like RF or wireless certifications are commonSimilar credentials; often holds degrees in electrical engineering and RF certifications
Work EnvironmentFieldwork involving driving to test sites, collecting signal data, and analyzing network performancePrimarily office-based or lab work focused on designing, testing, and optimizing RF systems
Industry UsageUsed in telecom companies for network testing and optimizationUsed across telecom, electronics, and wireless industries for system design and testing

Drive Test Engineers and RF Engineers share similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but their roles differ in work environment and focus. Drive Test Engineers primarily perform field testing to evaluate network performance, while RF Engineers focus on designing and optimizing RF systems in labs or offices.

What are some common challenges faced by Drive Test Engineers during fieldwork, and how can they be addressed?

Drive Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating signal quality, unpredictable weather conditions, and navigating unfamiliar terrains during fieldwork. To address these, it's important to prepare thoroughly by reviewing test routes, ensuring all equipment is calibrated and functional, and maintaining clear communication with the network operations team. Additionally, adaptability and strong problem-solving skills help in quickly resolving on-site issues, leading to efficient data collection and accurate reporting.

What is a Drive Test Engineer?

A Drive Test Engineer is a telecommunications professional responsible for testing and optimizing wireless networks. They conduct field measurements by driving through designated routes with specialized equipment to collect data on signal strength, call quality, and network coverage. This data helps network operators identify issues such as dead zones, dropped calls, or weak signals, enabling them to improve network performance. Drive Test Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring reliable mobile communication and enhancing user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Drive Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drive Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of wireless communication systems, RF principles, and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with drive test tools like TEMS, Nemo, or SwissQual, as well as proficiency in data analysis software, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and convey findings clearly. These abilities ensure accurate network performance assessments, which are crucial for optimizing wireless networks and improving user experience.

Job description

ELECTRICAL INTEGRATION & TEST ENGINEER

Mesh Optical Technologies was founded on the belief that optical photons will be at the center of advanced technologies in the coming century. Making advanced technology ubiquitous means building at scale, and that's exactly what we're doing at Mesh.

We are seeking an Electrical Integration & Test Engineer to own the electrical integration of production equipment, test systems, and development lab infrastructure. You will get deeply familiar with the electrical design of our products and production systems and are expected to participate in every step of the integration process-from line bring-up and debug through production ramp and sustained operation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the electrical integration of production equipment, test systems, and workstations across manufacturing lines and development labs
  • Lead electrical bring-up, debug, and validation of new and modified production cells and test stations, resolving issues across power, signal, controls, and instrumentation boundaries
  • Own end-of-line test systems and development lab test assets, including their electrical hardware, cabling, instrumentation interfaces, and long-term operational reliability
  • Design, build, integrate, and maintain electrical test fixtures, cable assemblies, and hardware interfaces used for qualification, validation, and manufacturing
  • Define and maintain electrical interfaces between tools, instruments, fixtures, and factory infrastructure, including power distribution, grounding, and signal routing
  • Serve as front-line electrical engineering support for the production floor, troubleshooting electrical issues and driving rapid resolution
  • Evaluate proposed designs for electrical integration feasibility, providing feedback on connector access, cable routing, test point placement, and debug accessibility
  • Evaluate nonconformances and electrical failures to determine root cause and drive corrective action and system improvements
  • Drive test readiness for new product introductions, revisions, and production ramps
  • Interface with both engineers and technicians to optimize electrical integration, test, and automation workflows

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in electrical integration, test, hardware debug, or manufacturing (internships, co-ops, and substantive project experience qualify)
  • Experience with electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system-level electrical documentation
  • Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, power supplies)
  • Strong electrical debugging and troubleshooting skills
  • Demonstrated engineering intuition, critical thinking, and comfort with ambiguity
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with optical, RF, or high-speed electrical test equipment (e.g., VNAs, BERTs, optical power meters, high-bandwidth oscilloscopes)
  • Experience integrating or maintaining multi-station production test systems or factory automation equipment
  • Experience designing electrical test fixtures, probe interfaces, or cable assemblies
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems, instrument control (GPIB, USB, Ethernet), or test automation frameworks
  • Scripting or programming experience (e.g., Python, LabVIEW) for instrument control, data collection, or test automation
  • Experience with PCB bring-up, board-level debug, or electrical validation workflows
  • Familiarity with power distribution, grounding practices, and signal integrity in production environments
  • Experience writing test plans, procedures, and providing go/no-go judgment and rationale
  • Experience working in Linux environments
  • Documentation and configuration management experience in a production environment

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Electrical Integration & Test Engineer: $115,000.00 - $140,000.00/per year

Title and base salary are determined on a case by case basis commensurate with experience and merit.
